I want to repaint the heads, intake and valve covers on my 68 327. The color orange for that year appears darker and more red than later versions of the orange that I've seen. I'm not sure how the engine orange color changed over the years or when. Am I imagining it or are there different shades of Chevy orange engine paint?
Does anyone have recommendations on the color and the type of paint to use? Would prefer spray bomb cans as opposed to something I'll have to spray thru a gun.
I'm not sure about color variations over the years, but I can comment on paint bands. Over the last year and a half I painted my valve covers twice - both times using Chevy Orange out of a spray can. Each time the covers were sand-blasted and cleaned prior to painting. The first time I used Seymore paint and primer which peeled off after about a 1/2 year. I then redid the job using Duplicolor ceramic and it is holding nicely and I suggest their paint over the former.
"Chevy Orange" is generic and probably changed a bit over the years. As long as you stayed away from either end of the spectrum (flaming red on one end and Orange Crush orange on the other), you'd probably be okay.
Hi R119
I agree that the color varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
I'd chose a high-temperature paint which decreases the amount of 'darkening' on the manifold's heat crossover. You really can't go wrong if you follow Mike's point.
Regards.
