Default Intake Manifold Port

Can someone tell me the function of the screw-in port in my Edlebrock intake manifold between the distributor and the carb? Is it for the PVC valve vacuum line?

Hi PC,
On early stock manifolds that's the location is for the fitting with nipples that supplies the vacuum for the lights/wipers, the power brakes (?), and auto transmission (?).
So I'd think you're looking at a possible vacuum source.

Alan

Alan is correct. There are different ports available for different options on your car. It will also depend on the type of carburetor you have some will source vacuum from the back of the carburetors for power brakes others from that manifold port. If you can tell us a little more about your car we can give you a little more dierection.

Vacuum source. PCV from valve is normally to carb base.

You can get a variety of choices. I think the one I have here is from a late 60's BB it's a 2 port.

I believe you are correct depending on the carb and model there also maybe one in the back of the carb base for PB. I believe most Holley's use the manifold port for power brakes.

Scott:

The engine is a (383) s/b with a 7501 single plane Edlebrock intake. The new carb is a 4bbl 4601 Holley Avenger. The new engine that is replacing the original 350/270 that had a quadrajet carb.

Transmission is Turbo 400 auto

Power steering, Power windows A/C etc

My intake looks very similar to yours....I also have two ports one on either side of the thermostat housing and I notice on yours it appears to have a temp sensor correct?

I have the same port directly behind my car that you have with the chrome fitting...what is that for?

Here's a picture showing the PCV valve hose connection at the front (note spring clamp) and the plug in the rear of the base where I guess the PB hose might go on a PB car.
I just happen to have these because I sent some CEC pictures to someone this afternoon.
Regards,
Alan

Alan:

Thanks for the pictures...it will help. This is going to take me some time to figure out where all these vacuum lines and electrical lines go because of using a different type carb. My new carb is a Holley 4106 avenger and my intake is an Edlebrock 7501 single plane.

Vacuum to supply light/wiper/cruise/auto tranny systems should come off the distribution fitting screwed directly into the manifold. The power brake diaphragm supply should feed off a large fitting at the carb base (back of Q-Jet...don't know about Holley). The PCV 'purge' line should feed into the front of the carb at the base (so the fumes can mix with the fuel/air charge from the carb). Distributor vacuum can should be fed from a vacuum port on the carb: usually that is from a 'manifold' vacuum port; "green" folks will want to use 'ported' vacuum carb fitting.

Basically here is what you will need to run from the manifold using a vacuum port fitting. One line from your Transmission Module Use metal tubing and connect the ends with rubber tubing other wise one long piece of rubber tubing will collapse and cause shifting issues. A second line for the vacuum line that works your head lights and wiper door. The third is a male treaded port that a metal power brake booster tube (for Holley) will connect to. Then a rubber hose connects it to a check valve in the power brake booster. I believe that the vacuum fitting that you want will be for a LS-5 with AT/PB. Its like a LT-1 but with one extra port for the auto trans that a LT-1 does not have.
Good luck

Dont connect your PCV line to a port in an intake runner. You will cause that cylinder to run lean.
Always connect a PCV line to the base of your carb, or to a fitting in the plenum of the intake.

Scott:

Thanks...your info is helpful. I am about to put the engine back in the car and I have a feeling the sensors and vacuum lines and fittings will not match so I will probably be asking for more help. Also thanks to others who have replied
