I've been wondering this since I discovered that little keyhole on my front fender. What does the factory alarm do? And how do you trigger it? I'm pretty sure mine doesn't work, other than to run down my battery, but I'm still interested in what it was originally for.
Hi RK,
You don't say what year your car is.
In 68-72 the alarm had 3 switches, each door and the hood. If the alarm was set and they were opened the alarm horn sounded. It was an option through 71 and became standard in 72.
Not quite as sophisticated as todays alarm systems.

Alan
HI ALAN, behind my drivers side quarter panel i saw a horn. i figured it was the alarm but it does not work.
No, beep ,beep, beep, beep. You will have to check your AIM, it will show you all your contacts, relays, flashers and horn, etc. From there, you will find your problem. Good luck.

Hi Nutsy,
I believe the alarm relay and flasher were/are located in the passenger's side rear storage compartment below the lift out fiberboard liner.

My 1970 factory alarm had been buggerized. Cut wires to disconnect it. I bougth an all new repro factory alarm harness. The harness exxtends from the rear of the car (the on/off switch) to the front (the hood close/open sensing switch). It has wires running off the the door open/shut switches in the door jamb, and also wire running to the jack storage compartment where there are some relays, etc. The alarm horn is located between the front top of the drivers side rear well and the bulkhead behind the seats.
81-82 have a starter interrupt, so when you trip the alarm, the car won't start. To reset the starter interrupt, you unlock either door with the key. Prior to that, all they did was make noise, for 3 to 7 minutes.
For the money you will spend on repairing that "horn beeps, lights flash" stuff, you can purchase a modern unit that relays real-time GPS location and notification to security service and/or police. Do you just want to make it "original"...or do you want to be able to find your stolen car?

When I turn my alarm key on, all it will do is beep, beep, beep ,,, and wont stop...
checked the contacts at door and hood, still same problem .....
Never easy ..is it ..
Like someone said ...might as well invest in a new alarm system...
