Default 69 storage compartments refurb question

I picked up a beautifully done 3 door preassembled unit from Corvette America in the proper saddle color. Looks great and saved me a ton of time.

I have searched (apologize if I missed it) for an answer regarding the install of the lock and the push buttons latches on the doors for the storage units behind the seats.

Since the matching carpet has already been installed what is the best way to create the new holes accurately position wise and without dethreading the carpet.... I know I can use the old unit for templating but the pre affixed carpet is scaring me.

I had a "little" issue with some valuable black carpet on a 66 shelby so I want to be careful the second time around.

Pencil soldering iron?

thanks in advance,

SM

Hi SM,
I would use a new, sharp pointed, x-acto blade to cut just the carpet backing, working from the rear side of the doors. (The doors are drilled I hope!).
I'd then carefully trim the carpet loops from the top side of the door with a scissors cutting each loop as needed to prevent a 'run'.
Remember, the button's bezel is there to hide a bit of a goof if you make one.
I really didn't have any trouble cutting the carpet on my 71's doors...so hopefully you won't either.
Regards,
Alan

X-acto or pencil-type soldering iron will do it. The soldering iron method will 'seal' the loose ends on the carpet...but it makes some noxious fumes. Go with what you think is best. You can mark them and disassemble the doors to work on the carpet. Switchover of locks is easy with a retainer nut on the backside releasing the lock mechanism. If you disassemble the doors, use a flat piece of wood and some hand clamps to 'squish' the frame and carpet down so it can be reassembled. If you don't, you risk breaking the frames.

Take it apart I don't think the carpet is glued on, it wasn't on mine.
Can't hurt to look.

I've done two storage compartments using an exacto knife to make the holes. No problem. Worked fine.
