I am looking at the possible purchase of a 1968 427 Corvette coupe. A buddy has a friend that is has a factory original 427 Coupe. The info he has on the car is it is Silver no option car. He has had a recent paint job and engine work, needs new seat covers and carpeting missing driver's side kick pannel, front wheel wells have 72 type lower flares by the gills door pannels have been replaced. frame looks okay.
My question is how can I research whether this is truly a 427 do the vin number tell me what the car should have? Can someone give me a ball park figure to offer him should it trully be a factory BB
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

...427...The info he has on the car is it is Silver no option car...
The 427 was an option. Trim tag will list the original colors.
...My question is how can I research whether this is truly a 427...
With original documentation with the car; tank sticker, original invoice, original window sticker, etc. Since the big block configuration was optional, any previous owner could have swapped the engine, added the parts, and made a big block.
...do the vin number tell me what the car should have?...
No.
...Can someone give me a ball park figure to offer him should it trully be a factory BB...
Anybody's guess without pics. Per your post, the front clip has been replaced. I'm guessing the car has been whacked.
the vin will tell you what year it is and it will tell you what sequence during the year the car is built, from 1 to 28566. It will also tell you if it is a convertible or a coupe.
72 type flares will scare away many buyers. Don't pay original engine money for this car unless you do lots of research.
Hi BB,
The engine pad needs to have the serial number stamp matching the VIN of the car and the engine identification stamp needs to include one of the 427 engine suffix codes from 68 production. In addition, the date of the engine build needs to make 'sense' with the build date of the car.
The 427 suffix codes in 1968 were: IL, IQ, IM, IO, IR. The L88 was IT and the L89 was IU.
ALL this information can be WELL faked.
Determining if the car was indeed a BB car, and this is the engine it left St. Louis with, is a BIG and SCARY job!

Alan
