I was wasting some time looking at Corvettes on eBay and I notice quite of few '72s had wood trim on the shifter bezel plate. Some had deluxe interior, a few did not.
My '72 has deluxe interior but my shifter bezel is black. Well....... chrome and black, actually not much black is left on it. My plan was to paint it to make it look better.
Is the wood a factory applied part or is just an aftermarket dress up?
Both answers are correct. The deluxe interior package usually included a wood grain insert for the trim plate. It's a stick on applique. Check the NCRS Judging Guide for applicable model years.
There are/were aftermarket wood grain trim for the plate for anyone who wanted the accent. Most are stick on; some are actual wood.
Hi,
To continue stirring things up...
The info I have indicates that in 70-72 cars the factory used a real walnut veneer insert on the console trim plate. BUT not ALL 70s with the custom interior got the insert.
The service replacement and reproduction trim plates had/have the plastic contact inserts.

Alan
PS: As usual, thanks to the 70-72 NCRS Tech Manual and Judging Guide.
One more thing, as far as the adhesive on these original wood inserts it's more of a double sided "masking tape" as opposed to a glue. Many of the originals were/are damaged from the infamous leaky T-Tops.
Hi WB,
Leaky Tops?
Are you saying the 'Water and Vacuum Water Test' detailed in the AIM in UPC 0, Sheet F-2, DIDN'T catch ALL the leaks?
I find it hard to believe that Chevrolet would deliver a car to a customer that leaked when it rained!!!

Alan
