I am wondering if anyone knows what the correct paint color was used for the black metal gauge bezel and shifter plate on a 74 Corvette (Flat Black, Semi-Flat Black, Semi-Gloss Black, or Gloss Black)? I am pretty shure that it was not gloss black. Also what brand paint have you guys used and is their a company that markets black paint just for this? I want a factory look and color. Also was an original Radio Delete/Block Offf Plate the same color? I see the reproduction ones look a little more like a gloss finish then I see original ones in an L88 and so on.
The [new] Krylon "Fusion" spray paint, in semi-flat black, is a bit less glossy than the earlier version. It is still a good match for it. Other brands may have a "satin" black that is nearly the same.
I understand that John Deere sells a "Blitz" black that is the correct sheen and is a durable paint [but I've not tried it]. Some auto stores may sell a spray paint identified as "Trim" black paint, also.
When putting paint directly on metal, the metal must be very clean and dry. Also, the paint should be allowed to cure for several days before it will adhere well. If you are going to use an X-Acto or razor blade to strip off paint from the lettering and edges [that should not be painted], do so after about 30 minutes of curing time...and be careful not to handle the part in any painted area to limit any surface damage to the new paint. If cuttings from the removed paint land on any painted areas, leave them there until the paint cures enough to brush them off. Otherwise, you will damage the painted surface trying to clear them.

Thanks guys for all the help and advise. I will be heading to Wally World to grab some cans of Krylon. This is the same color used on an original Radio Delete/Block Off Plate, correct?
