Hi Andy,
They LOOK correct.
There are quite a few variations of these covers around because they were original to many engines over the years and were sold over the counter for MANY years.
The casting numbers will tell if they're "correct" for a 69 car.
Price seems good depending on if you can clean/polish them or need to send them off to be done.
Regards,
Alan
You won't know until you see the numbers. Price is decent as repros go for 130+ each from the vendors. They will look correct and can be cleaned up. I bought a set for 100.00 on ebay, cleaned them up and they look great. Here's a few pics of mine, before & after. It took a couple days, lots of sanding.
Glenn
Before cleanup
One done.
Both done & on the engine.

Mr. Alan, i have the engine out and have been working on gathering all the paints etc for the job. I'll post pics when I'm done. We've been sand blasting everything and also working on Fletcher's rear end in the 72.
what are the casting numbers for 69? I looked in the NCRS manual but cant find more info.
Glenn, I appreciate all your feedback and hope you stick around as I read where your selling your vette.
Thanks,
andy

Hi Andy,
It sounds like you and Fletcher have a lot going on.
I BELIEVE the number for 69-71 R.H. is 3973392.
And the number for 69-70 L.H. is 3990994.
The numbers are very confusing because as I said a number could be used only for production and another number only for service.
My over the counter aluminium covers are:
3965542 R.H.
3989005 L.H.
The 71-72 left hand cover (either production or service) is easy to spot because it's set up for the rubber push-in oil cap not the twist-in chrome cap.
BIG FUN!!!
Regards,
Alan
PS: As is often the case, the numbers aren't given in the TECHNICAL INFORMATION MANUAL because the numbers aren't judged since they can't be seen on the judging field.
Glenn what did you use to clean them up? They look great... I have a 72 LT 1 and the covers are pretty bad, thanks Kevin
Nine year old thread - not sure if you were hoping for a quick response?
Good to see a reply from our buddy Alan, though.
Blast from the past.
Still MIA I think?

Hi Stev-o where does one get them vapor blasted? Never heard of that procedure thanks Kevin
Vapor blasting is a relatively new process in the U.S, but has been popular in Europe for quite some time.
I restore vintage Japanese motorcycles and when I rebuilt the motor on my '74 Kawasaki H2 750, I disassembled the motor and shipped it to RestoCycle in Tucson. Nils is the owner and an avid motor head, the motor came back to me looking fantastic and still does to this day, about two years later. [These Kawasaki motors are aluminum and came unpainted from the factory]. He does car parts too, check out his website. Free estimates here...
Jerry MacNeish does that also. I have had my '69 valve covers done by him and they are amazing. Clean, tumble and put new grommets and the emblem on them. MUCH easier to clean them now using solvent and a paper towel.
Do not use this process if you want to keep the polished finish. The "shine" will be replaced with a smooth matte finish when you get them back.
Gentlemen you are right. Nils did an absolutely fabulous job on them and got them back to me in three days including shipping time, unbelievable Thanks for your input!!!! Kevin
