So I bought a set of new Al Knoch carpet for my car at Carlisle. In looking at some other parts vendors, they specify a difference between the carpet for a 4-speed and an automatic transmission. The set I purchased has no specifications for transmission. I havent gotten around to install it yet, but everything seems to look ok. What would the difference between the 2 transmissions be?
There might be some difference in carpets for an earlier vintage of Corvette; but I can't envision why there would be a difference for C3's unless it has to do with the area under the clutch pedal.
On earlier cars, the optional M40 required clearance in the tranny tunnel. A section on the passenger's side was cut away and a panel with a slight bump out was installed. The bump out makes the tranny tunnel carpet fit a little differently than the 4 spd and there is a little less area in the passenger's footwell. Check the AIM for your year to determine whether the bump out panel was used. The TH400 needed it; the TH350 may not.
4 speed with no bump out:
AT car with added bump out:
Bump out at the bottom of the 1 in the job number.
For molded carpet sets, the bump out makes a slight difference in fit.

Hi Mike,
Do you have any more pictures of the 'bumpless' interior?
I'm interested in the shape of the jute insulation on the transmission tunnel.
Regards,
Alan
