Default 4-speed vs. automatic carpet question

So I bought a set of new Al Knoch carpet for my car at Carlisle. In looking at some other parts vendors, they specify a difference between the carpet for a 4-speed and an automatic transmission. The set I purchased has no specifications for transmission. I havent gotten around to install it yet, but everything seems to look ok. What would the difference between the 2 transmissions be?

There might be some difference in carpets for an earlier vintage of Corvette; but I can't envision why there would be a difference for C3's unless it has to do with the area under the clutch pedal.

On earlier cars, the optional M40 required clearance in the tranny tunnel. A section on the passenger's side was cut away and a panel with a slight bump out was installed. The bump out makes the tranny tunnel carpet fit a little differently than the 4 spd and there is a little less area in the passenger's footwell. Check the AIM for your year to determine whether the bump out panel was used. The TH400 needed it; the TH350 may not.

4 speed with no bump out:

Bump out at the bottom of the 1 in the job number.

For molded carpet sets, the bump out makes a slight difference in fit.

Interesting! Thanks for the info.

So, if you have a 4-speed in the car and bought an auto-tranny carpet, you may have a 'loose' area where that bump is. Good to know.

Interesting-so this may be why some people say a 700R4 fits better in a car that originally had a TH400 than it does in a 4-sp car?

7T1 and Mark: Yep on both accounts. A molded carpet set for a 4 speed car will require some fitting in an AT car and vicey-versy. Doable, but fidgety.

TH400 cars already have the clearance for the 700R.

Interesting! The bump is definitely there (1974 TH400). Learn something new every day!

Hi Mike,
Do you have any more pictures of the 'bumpless' interior?
I'm interested in the shape of the jute insulation on the transmission tunnel.
Regards,
Alan

Yes, but none of them show the jute.
