Yesterday's Time Trials at the Pure Stock Shootout at Mid-Michigan Motorplex
Yesterday I went to the Mid-Michigan Motroplex for the Pure Stock Shootout time trials. I am always amazed at the amount of hookup that the repo street tires are achieving with closely stock cars from the 60s and 70s.
COPO Camaro with all aluminum 427
COPO Camaro 11.618 and 120.64 speed on this time trial run.
This is the Pennington L88 coming off the line.
Note the front end lift with street tires.
Hope that you can read the ET of 11.557 and 120.72mph
Another very fast combination in the 11s was the 1969 Firebird with the ram air 400 engine.
I didn't go back today, so I don't know who had the most bragging rites for 2010.

It's funny that these stock cars are so much faster than when they were new. I am impressed with the level of detail work that must go into these cars, as they will build the motors with every tolerance at the optimum value while still being within factory spec.

Spend enough time and money working on something and one can eventually get results. People have so much more money today to spend on these clones. Hooking the tires is key and today's "stock" tires are much stickier than the originals.

the only question i have is this.. are the engines realy stock..
it dont take much for some dufis to fake a 327 into a 357 or something like that with better heads, ect ect..
verry nice pics though man.. would of been cool to see in person

I know that the Pennington Vette has been torn down and certified. There were several L88s, several aluminum block COPO Camaros, and at least a couple Ram Air Firebird 400s.
Pure Stock Muscle Cars are only allowed a 0.070 overbore. They must run the original air cleaner. Also they must run original exhaust manifolds, full exhaust, etc. The only real bragging rites come with low ET top speed, and top dog of the meet.
The best of three time trials on Friday dictate your elapsed time. You are then matched against another car with a closely matched ET on Saturday. You then race that car best two out of three. If you break out and exceed your Friday best time by X amount, you are disqualified.
So the next year you cheat and improve your Friday ETs by say 1/2 second. That only means that your are matched against another car with an ET that is again similar to yours.

If I am not mistaken, before racing you present the car to tech with one cylinder head removed...maybe not this particular association?

They inspect the pistons, measure bore and stroke, measure the valves, measure the cam lift and inspect the profile.....

i am more refering to the fact of needing new gaskets and stuff..

Thanks for the pics Jim!
I am ATE UP with the Pure Stock and F.A.S.T. racing stuff. I read everything I can find on them and watch every video on youtube I can find... Particularly the F.A.S.T cars.... How quick/fast they are going with basically stock suspensions/pizza cutter bias ply tires is just amazing.... Honestly, the compound and soft sidewall on those Wide Ovals is better for hooking then you would think....and then add in the bad assness of the Vette chassis/IRS, I see how Terry, Julie and Wayne get their vettes to go mid 1.50 60's with stock chasis...(ofcourse with careful ballast placement)
Those F.A.S.T. cars are the EPITOMY of true MUSCLE cars....
