Well the day I have been waiting for finally came! Got the car over to my buddys house we got the hood off and went to wrenchin' and come 4 o clock we had it out on the stand and disassembled ready for new parts tomorrow! While the engine is out I am going to take my time cleaning and painting everything in and around the engine bay. The fun part of maskiing everything off comes after church tomorrow here are a few pics of everything that went on today
Before the process started
Jumping right in and getting the easy stuff off and out!
Im totally to blame... The fan shroud just wouldn't some out. I got impatient and snapped it
Radiator out! now we are getting deep
And shes out!
I couldnt help but get the picture of me standing in the middle of the engineless car
No heart
And the engine getting undressed
More pics to come of the whole process. Today was a prodductive day cant wait to see the finished product!
i know how you feel... i also snapped my shroud on the way out so took that time to swap to elec fans. i used tinfoil to mask everything off before i painted and some fine wire-wheels for a drill worked pretty good at cleaning it all up
Looks great mj and yeah that thing was a %#@$€ to get out! I hope I can get mine to lookin like that.. I'm doing a top end rebuild and engine detailing/painting and bay painting. I have heard tin foil will be my new best friend Haha

thanks i spent almost 7 hours in the engine bay with all different wire-wheels and sandpaper and scrapers trying to get it nice and clean its amazing how dirty things get over 35 years but in the end its all worth it
That's cleanest engine I've seen pulled in a while. Was it redone before?
it was actually a basic gm crate engine that the PO had put in place of the original block, no idea where the original is today but oh well. I think it was put in there around 05 so its still fairly new and only has about 6000 miles on it i believe
hammadown and mj what type of paint did you all use? I picked up some rustoleum flat black and the rustoleum primer. I used it on my tahoe z71s bumper before and it looked good so figured id try it on the bay... also want some opinions! what color should i do the block? im wanting to paint the car lemans blue metallic next spring so when my valve covers come in im sending them off to memphis to get powdercoated that color, but should i do the block black? or something else? dont get me wrong i LOVE the chevy orange its classic, but to say the least im just not that big of a denver bronco fan haha
Actually, found Rust-Oleum #7798 semi gloss black work's best for engine compartment's. Then #7519 stainless steel for trim pieces like thermostat water neck, corroded metal relay's, ext. Look's a lot more natural than silver paint. Think I'd paint the engine to year of the car. Good luck with your project, as know what you're going through.
You did not need to remove the shroud or the radiator. The shroud comes right out once the motor is out. Put the rad and new shroud in before you reinstall the motor. Don't install the water pump till the motor is back in. Much easyer that way.
at first i used the rustoleum semigloss and didn't like it very much so i took it all off and used the rustoleum flat black very happy with the finished product
I went with white for the engine bay while replacing the engine.. Much more reflective light while working in there and a little easier to see fluids ect that might leak ...

im going to be replacing the mechanical fan with dual electric fans and i wanted to be able to test the rad and paint it and with it out i have that much more room to paint in the bay. but thanks for the advice that would save some trouble for sure
Well, black may look good to you, but it screams "repop short block" to most everyone else. Black is what most remanufactured engines are painted. If that doesn't bother you, leave it black.

well i wanted some color, but i had no idea what i could paint it so it will match the lemans blue metallic im painting the car in the spring.. do you have any suggestions? Im sending off my valve covers and air cleaner to get powder coated the color so i figured they would go best with black
