What's the theme of the car? If it's stock semi gloss black or "under hood black". If it's custom you may want to consider the body color or a complimentary color. If it's a road race car many use light gray. Just keep in mind anything other than the stock semi gloss black will be much harder to maintain.
If you do it black, try some John Deere "Blitz Black". It is a bit more than Krylon etc. but applies beautifully and dries to a perfectly uniform satin sheen... no "tiger stripes" like some other finishes. It is quite durable and heat resistant for a spray bomb product as well; good stuff.
I normally use Rust Oleum semi gloss black with pretty good result's. It's pretty good stuff, and since normally needing way more than first planned, nice to know I can just run down to the corner hardware for more in a pinch.

Mark,
Thanks for reminding me about that. I had read about it and saw pictures of it after it dried. Looks pretty nice. I might want to use that for my frame
Hi,
I believe the original Krylon #1613 is still being manufactured but is only available from 'industrial' suppliers.
I bought a new supply a couple months ago from a photography supply house in California.
Although I like the Quanta and the Blitz blacks I still like Krylon the best.
The way I read the Krylon label it's lacquer.
Regards,
Alan

Used Eastwood's black paint for the firewall. The splash shields - the triangular like shaped shields between the frame and firewall, I painted Ford Engine Grey. It's so dark down there, it's good to have some grey colored surfaces to reflect light so you can see.
Also, the steel stone sheilds at the lower left and right hand sides, also in grey. (1968 and 1970)
