New Guy ..
a couple months ago while on vacation back to my home town of Albq N.M. I stopped into visit my step dad while there he took me into the garage and explaned that he just did not have the time or energy for his old ride and wanted to sell it to me ...we talked a little about it then he shoted out "one dollar is all I want for it" ,well I had to run to my wife and get a dollar from her,
he explaned that it was a familiy ride and was never to be let out of the fam...no prob there
what I know about the car is my step dad bought it in 85 it already had the aftermarket L88 hood and fender flares well shoot even the rims were on it ..he tells me it is the OG block but he had it built in 86 and took the vin and engine codes off when decking it

I have looked up the casting numbers for the block heads and intake they all add up to the 427 390hp l36 motor, I'm told it has been bored .60 over and has piston, rods and a cam all of witch are unknown all he can remember about the rebuild is it was @ 11.5:1 CR
. miles are OG 78+KTank sticker missing
should be rally red with std interior july 18 build date block is July ? of 68 heads are July 8 68 ...as u can see she needs lots work . I have used a scope to look into all of the cylinders and they all look great with no rust or gunk so me and the kids are going to drop the tank and drain the fuel that's in it replace all the rubber fuel lines then we plan on changing the oil and filter, priming the oil system with a drill then go for a start up
my plans are a 2 stage rebuild 1st I wanna get it running and give it a hack job flat black paint so I can drive it and gather parts for a better rebuild...
What's your guys thoughts on the flares ??? My step dad wanted them off and started to do the work but I'm prolly gonna leave them because of the work involved ..

Nice score. I wish I had a Step-Dad as nice as yours. That's awesome.
Being a NM car for the last-umpteen years and (hopefully) in the garage, has kept further degeneration at bay.
Be sure to check out the condition of the frame, all pivot bushings, brake MC, all brake lines, and each caliper before getting too anxious. Front bearings are easy to clean and repack and unless you are really talented, let a pro help determine the rear bearing condition. Corvette IRS may be a new experience for you.
Getting the motor to roll over, cough, spit and run may work out great but once running, you need to ensure the car stops.
No reason to tear up a new project for lack of establishing a solid baseline.
Flares? Personal preference influenced by whatever wheel/tire combination you choose or stay with.
Interior-wise, check out the condition of the birdcage first. Southwest cars don't suffer as hard like other parts of the country.
Way to go. Thanks for the pics and keep us posted. Congrats!

Not only did you get a GREAT deal; you even remembered to post lots of pictures.
Did you know that it existed?
There's really not much to be unhappy about with a 68, bb, convertible... even if it is a bit of a project.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

1 buck is a great deal, but your first taste of heroin is free too!
Welcome to the forum!!

that's really some $1 investment, lol. good luck with your project it's all up from here and basically having the cost be whatever you put into it at this point you are way ahead of the game. i do have one serious suggestion and that is whenever you finish it, take it back and give you step dad the ride he had always dreamed about taking in it. it will be a long time before the smile is gone from his face (and you will never for get it your entire life)!! that's a family event not to be forgotten!

and welcome to the madness. Keep the flares, I like em.
