Getting ready to intall the new motor in the 77 and wanted to get opinions on what kind of paint I should use to paint the engine bay. I would like a semi-gloss finish. Is there a brand I should use? Do I need to primer everything first? I still gotta clean it up to see what I am working with here.

NOPE!!!!!!!!!! Just simply sick and tired of rehashing the same old requested info., that has been discussed and re-discussed over and over again. If, members here seeking answers, would take a little time and use the search feature...they will find all their answers X 10 FOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regards my tire thread....well, if the shoe fits????????????

Sounds like you know it all then! Believe me if I could go straight to an on point c3 search and find what I wanted without some "RICHARDS" comments, I would. Not that easy when you go through a bunch of c2,c4,c5 ,c6 info that doesn"t apply. Virtually every post here is a duplicate. People post on here to have contact with others with similar interest not just archives. I'm slow but I am beginning to realize that the same guy that was a "RICHARD" at the hardware store probably goes home and gets on this forum. I'm done with you!
I did a search on "POR-15 aluminum exhaust manifold paint" in C3 General and came up with nothing, so I think he''s ok. I would go with gray exhaust manifolds. This isn't part of the engine that you really want to "pop". You don't want to go overboard with bright, shiny things. Air cleaner lid, valve covers, even intake manifold are all valid candidates for popping. I prefer the exhaust manifolds to be a subtle, distinguished gray.

First off, the OP was asking for 'opinions' - since new members, with new 'opinions', join on a daily basis, that is not really something that can be searched on. It's a little different than searching for something like 'what's this switch under my steering column?'.
And since every possible topic has pretty much already been covered at sometime in the forum - why don't we just close down the forum to new threads?

The factory used semi-flat cheapo black as part of blackout. There would have been no primer in the engine compartment other than overspray during the body priming process.
I like Krylon semi-flat black rattle can off the shelf at Wally Word.
Hi ffv,
I agree that Krylon #1613 semi-flat black paint is a very good choice. Be careful that you get #1613 and not #51613 which is a very different formula. The #1613 has become more difficult to find.
The SEM family of paints is very popular too.
Good Luck with your project!
Regards,
Alan
Ok I did a search but was looking for a specific brand etc... With that out of the way, thanks for the info. I did not know if rustolium was a good choice or what. I will look for the 1613 Krylon. Thanks for the info.

Hi Tom,
I bought a case of 1613 from FilmTools.
The price was good and the service just fine.
When I ordered it I asked if in fact they REALLY had it and the person on the phone said, "I'll go look". She came back and said they had 60 cans in stock.
I believe it's new production because the lable now says INDUSTRIAL, (it use to say Interior/Exterior), on it.
Regards,
Alan

Alan,
Thought I would try out FilmTools based on your experience. So just placed an order for six cans.
Krylon semi-flat or satin black; John Deere 'Blitz' black; or other semi-flat or satin black will do. Flat black and semi-gloss black just do not 'get it'.
The absolutly best way to recolor your exhaust manifolds (short of having them ceramic coated) is to have them bead blasted, clean them off with lacquer thinner, shoot on two coats of Seymour "Cast Blast" ceramic paint coating in "cast iron" color. Then, let them dry well and carefully reinstall them. Now fire up the engine (as described on the paint can) so that the paint will "bake" into a ceramic coating.
The final finish looks exactly like bare cast iron but will never rust again!!!!

I'll chime in....if we had the same old posters here and no "new blood" then how do you think the forum would stay fresh and alive? it would be stale and stagnant imo so as redudant as the same threads to you might be? they aren't to others.
If you're tired of the same old threads, it seems you're not too tired to reply
