Are you talking about the door that closes off the fresh air? There is a door in the passenger side plenum (right in front of the fan) that shuts when you switch to MAX. It closes off the fresh air from coming from the cowl and allows for recirculation of the cabin air If the door is not closing it could be that the vacuum line that works the actuator is leaking or pinched closed.
Is it that the fan is not running on max? The Max has a orange wire that runs from the blower relay (located on the heater box in the engine bay) to the horn relay (driver side ) this line has a separate inline fuse that may have blown.
There can be several problems in that area. The A/C plenum could be clogged up with leaves/debris over the years. The air intake door (under the right-side cowl area) might be frozen in the 'open' position or the kickpanel door may not be opening fully...or at all.
Before you try to 'fix' any vacuum operated doors that don't work properly, make certain that they are [or are not] getting the vacuum signal they need to operated. Many such problems are due to the improper operation of the vacuum manifold valve located on the left side of the A/C control head (tranny tunnel).

7T1 you are alway on it
When I took my evaporator box apart to rebuild it I found a huge ball of pine needles in the bottom of it. No way was the air ever going to cool right. I think that relates to a lot of poor cooling A/C issues.
Thanks for all the info I do have vacuum at the door on passenger kick panel I need to check the vacuum on the door on passenger fire wall. Is that hard to get to .any tips
This maybe a little tricky The actuator is on the backside if the cowl vent door. But if my memory is correct there is a green vacuum line that runs to a nipple (that actually is part of the door) that is on the outside of the plenum . The nipple looks the same on the backside that connects a second short line to the actuator. On mine that little line somehow became pinched closed.
