I need to replace the front shocks on my 1979 L48 car with standard suspension. There are so many choices out there from surprisingly cheap to shockingly expensive.
I did a search but didn't find any recent discussions on what has and has not worked for you all out there in Corvette land.
I do not auto cross or race. I just drive it occasionally for fun. That being said, I wouldn't mind something that offered me a little extra edge in handling. Are the cheap Delco replacements good enough or is there something out there I can't live without that isn't too crazy price wise?
I have a 76 l48 that I just drove on the VIR touring Lights road course last week. I replaced old Delcos on it with twin tube KYB's which were much cheaper than billsteins. The kybs are slightly stiffer than oem quality and worked well on the track though I didn't push the car hard like some do given its age. I'm really happy with the kybs...less cost, more performance than stock delcos. here's a lap if you want to ride along.
If you just drive it for fun, just buy some decent gas shocks (Monroe, whatever) and you will be OK. If you want better quality and longer life, buy the Bilstein 'heavy duty' shocks.
I went ahead and replaced with the Monroe Sensa Tracs... Good price and good ratings. I am pleased with the decision based on the short drive back from the shop.
Thanks for the input.
