Default 1970-71-72 Carpet Question Please

A request for assistance please.

If you have a 70, 71, or 72 Coupe with air conditioning and astro ventilation I have a request for assistance from me to you please.

I installed my carpet in 2008 in my 1977 Corvette and I am approaching the carpet install in my 1971 Brandshatch Green Barn Find project now. In the rear compartment, over the wheel wells, there is a tube that vents water from the rear grilles to the wheel wells. Those tubes confuse me when it comes to laying in the carpet in that location. So, if you have one like it, and you can take a picture of the carpeting as it is installed in there, I would appreciate it very much. This will help me a great deal as I lay out the carpets in prep for the weekend install.

I am not certain that convertibles are the same in that area, hence the request for coupe assistance. I am also not certain if other years are the same, hence the narrow list of years for consideration.

If you have a picture, or can take a picture or two and post them, I would be ever so grateful to you for your assistance.

Thank you and best regards,

David

Dave .sorry I don't have any pics with the carpet installed in that area....( imagine that)........ but I do have these..........

Hope they help......

Hold on...................... I have one more trick up my sleave........

this is a pick of my factory carpet.....
you can see the detail of the cut for the hose on the piece to the right but you'll have to judge it by the contour of the piece.

Here are the specific areas I am seeking pictures for in your finished cars. I appreciate your help Hammer, I really do. If you have or can get pictures (everyone) of these areas it will help me a great deal. Specifically, does carpeting go up and around the area above the tubes?
Thanks again for your help.

the answer to your question is......... yes, the carpet does go up over the tube by about 5'' to 7'' give or take depending on the carpet manufacturer.

Default Thank You

Perfect, I will do just this after I fit the bottom of the carpet onto the wheel well. I have quite a bit of material and I will take it slowly to get it to look nice. I do appreciate your help Hammer, should now be a good weekend with pictures to follow.
Thanks again.

The A/C cars don't have the 'same' Astro-Ventilation system as the non-A/C cars. On the "non" cars, the rear deck grilles are functional because of the vacuum operated flapper doors on the underside of those grilles. They actually open to exhaust cabin air. The A/C cars just have block-off plates on those grilles.

Default How did it turn out?

I am curious as to how this turned out. I am in the process of fitting the wheel well carpet on my 72. Was wondering also if you cut an actual hole for the drain or slit the carpet to wrap around?
Thanks

Hi Scott,
I'll step in if I may.
There are 2 options here.... the carpet needs to have a round hole cut out of it for the drain tube to pass through.
You can make that cut and then disconnect the hose from the plenum so it can pass through the carpet, OR, you can make the circle cut and then slit the carpet to it's edge so the carpet can be slipped around the hose. This is what St.Louis did.
Even with the slit you can make a neat installation.
The pictures are of original underlayment and carpet. Note the hole didn't end up exactly where the pre-cut perforation was. They knew it would vary some depending on the carpet and the installer.
Regards,
Alan

I also ripped my carpet out yesterday and noticed my Astro vent tubes are shot. Are ready made replacements available? Also od/id info would be helpful so I could see if basic tubing with correct dimensions in available locally. Thanks!

New tubes are available from many of the corvette supply catalogs like paragon, corvette central, etc. I would go ahead and order the tubes rather than make your own. New ones have the extra rubber flange that attaches to the body inside of the wheel well. You'll have to remove the old rivets and install new ones but shouldn't be too hard.

Hi T,
Those shields are mounted in the inner/upper surface of each rear wheel -well.
They're what any rain water in the rubber hose drains out of the car through.

Alan
