Default door gap

I looked at a 1971 corvette today for sale and noticed it had a large gap were the body and drivers door meet at the hinge seam,
is this due to a sagging frame, I was able to insert my finger in the upper section of the gap. should I pass this one up and keep looking.also the front hood had paint damage is this due to the heat or a cheap paint job

Hi r,
There are many reasons for a bad door gap. It could be a very minor thing, or an indication of a larger problem.
The hinges could just need to be adjusted. The hinges could be worn and the door is sagging. The hinge pillar, or door frame, could have rust so the hinges aren't being supported properly. The door or fender, (or both), could have been damaged and poorly repaired.
What was the gap like at the rear of the door?
A picture would certainly help with a long distance diagnosis.
There are many reasons for the paint problem you noticed too. Can you describe what you saw?
Regards,
Alan

Yep. We know exactly what you're talking about. Alan's question about the rear gap is valid. Is it good, bad, or ugly?

If it's just the passenger side, and the rest of the door gaps look OK, it could be the screwed up gap that so many C3 came from the factory with.

Quality control?......I don't think so! and that's a poor excuse.. these are factory gaps and as good as it gets...... also illustrated on the 1968 some criticize as everything wrong......Bad previous repairs is more like it, or whatever happened over the years by previous owners........

I don't think I have seen a 74 with that tight of gap....sure I would like that tight of gap....but the 74's Ive seen are wider.....Fred
