Default Weatherstrip Question

B-pillar (seals rear of door glass). Original stripping was tucked into the j-channel of the chrome trim... new (Willcox) seal is not formed thin in that area. Should I try and angle/weasel/finagle the new seal so it catches the channel, or simply overlay it and glue in place? Thanks and Happy New Year!

Hi m77,
Are you sure you have the right pieces of w-strip.
I remember specifically that the w-strip had a little 'lip' formed in it to fit into the groove in the retainer that I believe was black on all cars.
I believe that continued at least through 77.
Also, I believe the retainer was painted semi-flat black.
Happy New Year!
Regards,
Alan

Thank you Alan for the reply, and the excellent photos. Oddly on my car one of the retainers is shiny, the other painted. My weatherstrip for this area is correct in length and general configuration for this place but they lack the "lip", and the door weatherstrips appear to fit quite well in a dry run. I have not installed the new windshield yet so cannot comment on a-pillar fit. This kit was sold as the more expensive type (i cannot recall the brand right now but it is NOT Metro) as the consensus here was to spend the extra and get a better fit. I will dig out my receipt later and see what I got. I'll update the thread then.

Hi m77,
If you look VERY carefully at the picture that shows the top of the seal, you can JUST see the start of the lip disappearing into the retainer.
I really think the reatainers were finished in black paint. I believe they're made from ss, so that might be what you're seeing.
Regards,
Alan

I think I may have the answer... my 1977 is a "late" production car in that it has the alarm integrated into the door lock as opposed to the front fender, and the other requisite "late" features. All the vendors list a "late 77-82" strip kit which contains b-pillar strips which match mine, and the later "single lever" style t-top seals... I bought one of these thinking that a "late" car should require a "late" kit. My t-tops and b-pillar strips are of the "early" style.

Anyone out there want to trade some late b-pillar and t-top CRC brand weatherstrips for some earlies?

Thanks yet again Alan for your generous sharing!
