Default 72 Center Hub Caps

I need quick opinion on rally wheels.

I'm picking up my 72 coupe on Friday. The owner (restor'er) tells me I have the option of the traditional "derby" center hub or the flat "GM Chevrolet" style cap for the Rally Wheels

Being a new C3 owner, I have no clue which is considered most desirable. They are all in perfect condition, so that's not an issue. Which one do I want?

here is what I think the flat cap is:

You want four, original, "traditional," rally wheel center caps. They are metal (stainless steel). Some of the new reproduction caps are plastic.

The flat cap style was 67 only. The caps in the ebay link are not NOS for Corvette. Might be Camaro or Nova.

If the rebuilder is just going to pass the cost of the caps on to you, then you need to choose which you want for the car. The original caps are metal and have "CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION" stamped and painted black on the outer face of the cap. Original caps will cost you about $250 NOS. Or you can scour the Corvette flea markets and pick up 4 used caps in decent condition for about $100. Or, you can buy the new plastic (chrome) caps that do not have the lettering stamped into them for about $75.

You just need to decide which you want.

P.S. If you plan on parking the car in public areas and leaving it for any length of time, you may want to go with the aftermarket 'plastic' hubs. At least, you don't lose $250 every time they get taken, if you go with the 'cheapies'.

with the idea of having a set of cheapo caps for everyday use so you don't have to worry about a cap getting launched into space when you hit a pothole or having it stolen. I've been meaining to buy a set for myself. This is what the originals look like.

It is the Firemist OO. That's the original paint and it's really pretty ragged but it really comes alive in the sunlight. Pretty advanced paint technology for 1972.

Actually, the FireMist paint series came out in the 1950's from Cadillac. They wanted something with 'pizzazz'....and they got it.

Hi,
From what I've read I believe the FireMist paint was developed and used on the 1964 Caddy for the first time.
My understanding is that it's the combination of pearl and larger metallic flakes that give it it's striking appearance in the sun.
Regards,
Alan
