I'm going to have my 71 front bumper grill and lower bumper guard rechromed. I will need to repaint the inner areas gray after the plating. What is the best way to do this? Do I need to do something to get the paint to stick to the Chrome? Thanks
Well.....I painted mine without priming first. It's held up for over 5 years without getting nicked up. But, I don't drive on gravel roads.
The important issues are: get the metal very clean and dry; then, paint the grids and inner portion of the chrome surround with a cast iron colored paint. [Dupli-color sells a 'graphite' color in their "Wheel Paint" spray cans that is pretty close to the original color.]
After setting up for about 5-10 minutes, use an X-acto knife or razor blade to trim the paint from the leading edge of the grids...they should stay chrome. Then, let the paint harden completely before installing; this takes 3-5 days to cure, so don't rush it, or the paint will be fragile and get nicked up quickly.
