Default *** 1968 Question ***

Hello guys, Just was looking at the underside of my '68 and noticed that I do not have any (what I think they are called) splash shields. These would protect the backside of the footwell. Did early model '68 have these??? If so, are they a one year only '68 part??? If someone could post a pic of what they look like - that would be great. I think they were made of metal. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean on the firewall, or behind the wheel?

The '68 and early '69 cars had the firewall splash shields, but they were made of plastic. Those were changed to metal shields, thereafter. If you want to add those shields...and you aren't going for NCRS awards with your car...I would suggest that you opt for the later metal shields. Obviously, GM thought that metal was a better idea. I can't imagine the plastic ones lasting very long under there.

Also, the '68 & '69 cars has some 'under body' metal panels with insulation batting on their top-side. The panels and instulation sheets are still available, but the whole 'shebang' is pretty pricey. I'm sure they would help with cabin heat from the exhaust system, though.

Thanks, Charley. I remember seeing a pair of these in my garage awhile back. I don't remember when or where I got them from or where they are now. Now that I think about it they were probably from my '69 coupe that I used to own. (???) I am out to the garage to see if I can find them. Thanks for the help.

Those triangle things bolt to the frame and are triangle shaped. If you install headers of course the tri angle pieces will be in the way.
Blair is talking about the plastic squarish pieces that are mounted in front of the lower fire wall ie put your feet flat against your inside fire wall and the opposite side is the plastice pieces.

68 69 70 should have the plastic shields and 71 up are metal,

hope this helps.

68's had the plastic fire wall shields. You have my email address so email me and I can send you pics of the extras I have.

I found the pair that were "hidden/lost" in my garage. Funny how you can find something when you rip half the garage apart. The shields are metal and I do believe they were taken off my '69 427 coupe. I don't know if they were "correct" for that car. I will post some pics.

Here are the pics. I am guessing these are not correct for my '68 or even a '69. Thanks for the help guys - much appreciated.

My original owner 68 built in FEB 1968 has metal splash shields. The shields bolt to the frame and are unlike what is on my original owner 1970 that has a different configuration spalsh shield that has brackets attached to the fiberglass.
The 68 also came with foil backed insulation that was attached under the seating area and went forward through the opening between the fiberglass footwell and the steel spalsh shield to just below the steering shaft.

My 1968 original owner convertible built in FEB 68 and my original owner 1970 Corvette coupe built in JUL 70 do not come from the factory with plastic shields.

Thanks 70ZZ 96LT - Now I am really confused. Plastic or metal??? Maybe I should hang on to the metal shields I found in the garage - they just may be correct for my application.

My 68 coupe made in late March, had metal shields and the wet fiberglass insulation and metal shields did not last long before disintigrating. That wet fiberglass rusted everything underneath!

Soooo...... would the metal shields I posted pics of earlier, be considered correct for my early model '68??? I am pretty sure I took them off my '69 coupe before I sold it.

thanks for the explanation, and bkvette, thanks for the pics. Might go take a look and see what (if anything) is under there.

No wonder I didn't know what you were talking about. None on my car. I did slap some sticky insulation on there a few years back.
