Hey Guys
My clock in my 74 C3 has not worked for 5 years until today! It started on its own. I always disconnect the battery when not being used and the clock continued to run which tells me that there must be a battery involved. Any ideas as to where the battery is located for the dash clock? I would appreciate your help.
Kinda surprised to hear the clock is purely mechanical. I know mine is electric operated and realy thought it was original. I believe the AIM also shows an electric connection. Bill
The factory clock does use electrical power...but only to energize a solenoid that winds its mechanical mechanism. The clock can only run on each winding cycle for about 3-4 minutes. But, after about 2 minutes, the electrical contacts mate [inside the clock] and power the solenoid for another rewind.
Strange that it started working again. It could have been bound up with a little dirt or some vibration has caused some 'dirty' contacts to conduct again. Anyway, don't expect it to continue for too much longer.
I really like the original clock...when it works. I rebuilt mine 7 years ago, and it lasted about 6 years. Not going into the gauge cluster until there is a better reason to do so. I'll likely go with quartz clock for the next repair.
