So I have been lurking here for sometime now. as of late I have been reading up on to re-chrome my rear bumpers or not. I decided to send them out for re-chrome. I didn't want to send them back east so I found a place in Nor Cal. prices were really good so here's hoping they turn out good. The shop has been around for years in the Bay Area. I expect them back next week so as soon as I can Ill post some pics.
one off my list a bunch more to go next up carb to Lars and classic chambered exhaust.
Hi Paul,
I think it's a wise move to have your original bumpers re-plated.
It'll be interesting to hear your comments and see a picture when you have them back!
Regards,
Alan

It is possible to have a chrome replater ruin your bumpers. Take a rear bumper, hold it up eye level, and sight along the bumper horizontal surface. Sight along the horizontal surface at a bright light source. I have a pair of bumpers, bought from ebay of course, that look perfect from a distance. Use my sighting test above, and you'll see indentations/depressions in the horizontal surface where someone with a polishing wheel dug too much into the steel. Also, EPA restrictions are coming down hard on re-platers. I've heard that some replaters are being forced into shortcuts to avoid EPA restrictions/fines..Don't know if this is true. Anyhow, instead of replating my 70 rear bumpers, I just bought Paragon's repro rear bumpers produced as a GM licensee. Supposedly they use the original tooling to produce the bumpers....look great...expensive at about $750 a pair.
I've heard stories of bad plating. I'm hoping I won't be one of those cases. This guy has been plating for many years. He does several biker clubs and is a former vette owner crossing my fingers. I'll post pics soon as the are back
just talked to the chromer I should be seeing them this week. He did say the license plate bezel came out better than he thought. Some guy from a vette shop came in to get his stuff and saw it and was trying to buy it. hope to get them soon I'm getting a bit anxious.

Can you share some prices and additionl info? I have a hadful of items including my bumpers I want to get chromed, thanks!
I know there is a plater in souther Cal, they exchange for; rears $350, front may of been $350
there work looks good. I've only seen then at automotive swap meets.
Was at a used Corvette parts last week, he had some rears, one looked great, the other looked like it had paint brush streaks across it
Two rear bumpers and license plate bezel plus repairing some rust through and shipping was 500. Was 180 per bumper 70 for the bezel soon as the get hear ill post pictures. And let you know what I think
I've been looking around at platers to do one of my '70 front grilles. Got a quote of $300 from Paul's chrome plating back east (They advertise on "My Classic Car") so I started looking around locally. I spoke to a guy in La Mesa (east San Diego county) and he gave me a similar quote.
Bottom line here is that the EPA is putting chrome platers out of business...over 2/3 of the ones in CA have gone under as a result of their draconian regulations. Like tobacco, football, guns, and hamburgers, chrome is a symbol of an America that these !@#$%&*$ absolutely hate and they are hell-bent on eradicating it from our cultural landscape.
They do several types of plating, here is the link http://www.highlustrechromeplating.com/to the web site. I know that they have been there for many years, and do alot of bike parts. The owner had his own vette and is familiar with them. I understand some vette shops use him also. i have not seen the work yet, after talking to him I took the chance since he is only a couple hours away I figured it would be easier to deal with if I was not happy.
