So I took the Vapour Seperator out today and you could see how the factory sealant had started to come apart near the bottom edge allowing some fuel to weep through when any got into the separator.

The bottom appears to be glued in and then appears to have been dipped in some sort of sealer to cover the joints that has only lasted 50 years.... :-)

So I sanded the bottom 10mm of the casing to give something for the epoxy to bite with then masked it up.

Applied some JB Weld epoxy around the bottom edges and onto the bottom of the case.

Not very pretty but I hope it will stop the fuel weeping out.

Just need to paint it all satin black and fit it up with new hoses etc.

if I was to do it again and want it to look more like original I would possibly mix up some epoxy resin and dip the bottom.

Ya know I really like JB Weld for a lot of things. However, I'm questioning if it's actually a good fix on a fuel separator.
Food for thought.

Yes I did read that tank weld may be better for prolonged contact to fuel but in it’s doco it states it’s not recommended for plastic.

I found some older posts where they used JB Weld and it was holding up 10 years later.

Will need to monitor it.

Its a shame from reading feedback the reproduction items all seem to leak.

A few years ago all pleasure boats in the USA were required to have vapor recovery systems and could no longer be vented through the fuel caps.
There are some really nice set ups for family ski boats like Malibu Boats, Master Craft, and Ski Nautique.
They all use fuel separators and canisters which could easily mount up where the antenna and horn alarms are mounted.
They aren’t factory, but if you have to have one, they are available and could be a good substitute.
If I remember, Delphi makes several and they are available through Summit Racing.

Will need to keep an eye on it and see.

I also considered getting some epoxy fuel tank liner and just dipping the bottom edge in that.

So did some searching and found a good 2 part epoxy fuel tank liner

https://www.caswellplating.com.au/st...el-tank-sealer

If this one starts to leak, I have found another working original vapid separator that I will dip in the epoxy tank sealer.

Always a plan B :-)

Take II of fixing the vapour separator

Step 1 remove all the JB Weld.

After the JB Weld was removed I inspected the bottom seal to see where fuel had previously leaked.

Step 2 re-bond the bottom to the sides of the canister with gap filling thick CA. (High Fuel Resistant)

Once this sets up I will run a bead of Devcon DS220 two part epoxy (Highly resistant to hydrocarbon fuels including gasoline, jet fuel) around the bottom edge then repaint and refit.

I feel a higher confidence level with this method.

Masked it all up to keep the epoxy where I wanted it.

The DS220 sets amazingly fast so hard to work it really smooth.

Once set I sanded it to give some bite and did another layer of Gap-Filling CA, Overkill I know but can't hurt.

Sanded it all again to give a better surface for paint to adhere and painted the canister and hardware.

Seems to hold a vacuum so good start.

Will put in back in the Vette and monitor it to see if it actually sealed and stays that way over time. :-)

As an aside the second vapour canister I purchased in the UK was confiscated by eBay global shipping when it was about to leave the UK for Australia on the grounds that it was......

"deemed restricted.......within the Global Shipping Program. The item won't be sent to you, nor returned to your seller."

I got a full refund and I hope the UK seller did not loose out on the deal either.

50 year old fuel vapours can be a big problem in 2026 :-)

I have a Christmas tree ornament that “looks just like” that black plastic thing a ma gig you painted.
It isn’t one of my favorites on the Christmas tree.
If I don’t put it back on the tree this next year, maybe I can stick it in a box and send it to you.
I can even include a couple silver bells!

Sounds great, my wife loves Christmas decorations and we can never get enough 😀

Given from what I have read your ornament may be as good a start as the reproduction vapour separators. 🤯

Time to finish this off and re-install the vapour separator.

After a few minutes i decided the left rear muffler needed to come off to make it a bit easier to get to.

New hoses and clamps, still a bit of a pain but went back easy enough.

The second I took the cap off the tank fitting you could smell fumes. Once all hoses were on it went away quickly.

Hopefully it will last a few more years now :-)

I think I’ll move to Australia just for the reason alone.
Maybe we should do a Google Maps search and see if there is a queens trailer parked around on the property.

It helps if you don’t drive in the wet or on any dirt road etc.

The Quickjack also makes cleaning very much easier so once its clean it is not that hard to keep it that way.

Still some areas under the car I have not repainted and detailed.

Need to keep some projects for when I have free time, but since we retired we don’t seem to have much of it with elderly parents, 4 grandkids etc. these cars seem to have taken a back burner much of the time.

A trailer sounds good but what about a ramp truck.

…..

The ramp truck like that would be nice, but then I would need a trailer for the ramp truck.

It’s a bit like that, mini-me….

Guy who owns it lives not far from me and he built the COE just to take his rod to certain shows. He also built an enclosed trailer for shows where he did not want to take the ramp truck.

Great workmanship.

Hi Craig,
Nice work on the separator!

There's a COE that I see here on occasion.
It too is beautifully done.....the body was stretched into a 4 door crew cab.
I can't come up with a picture right now.
A couple of his friends decided they wanted to go 200 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
They got VERY close but broke the motor.
Regards....

Thanks Alan, I imagine a lot of work went into that 56 salt flats car, shame they did not make the 200 club this time, but what an experience it would have been. I hope they will try again.
