If you want to change the upper dash pad, there are some troublesome...but not necessarily difficult...things that must be done.
Lower the steering column (don't have to remove it); remove door sills, all screws from R/L dash pads, remove upper pad attachment bolt from behind the R dash pad, remove window pillar moldings. Then you just yank the upper pad off the retaining clips and throw it away (unless it is salvagable by someone else who wants an 'original' piece).
Depending on what stereo head unit you have (factory or aftermarket), you want to buy the best matching speakers that are of the same size/configuration as the ones you are removing. Impedence matching and wattage are important factors, depending on the sound system you have. You need to research this so that your system will work properly when you put it back together. Also consider if you want to add additional (larger) speakers in the kickpanels or in the storage compartment. You only want to do this "upper dash" thing ONCE !!!

Mine is farther apart (was) than it needed to do what you are looking to do....but it's a job I NEVER want to do again.....
It's 10lbs of crap in a 5lb bag up in there...
Whether or not you plan on using the dash speakers, install them anyway, just in case you decide to use them in the future.
I replaced my dash when I restored my 74, I installed speakers in the kick panel, as there were none there, but the kick panel had the perforations for there to be speakers. I thought I would use them and didn't put any in the dash, wish I did now, 4 speakers would be better tan just 2 in the kick panels.
The small dash speakers are located well and do a good job of reproducing high frequencies from the sound system. They WILL NOT do well at producing lower mid-frequency and low frequency sounds; you will need to add some larger [better] speakers in the kickpanel area and/or the rear compartment to get good full-range sound from your system. But, not including the dash speakers with whatever system you have will be a detriment to the sound quality.
