Thanks RR......I was taking the day off but I needed to see why the bolts wouldn't hold the hinges for the deck lid in place even after I ran a tap through the nuts. The rivet nuts were rust so much that they were spinning inside the deck support channel.
I wasn't about to remove the support to replace two rivet nuts so BUBBA told me to drill through the support channel and install 2 thru-bolts to hold the upper hinge in place.....I listened.......
The other hinge nuts are worse
wow..thanks for this pic, I was just about to drill the rear lid surround to attach the hinge uppers to it...wasn't aware that there was a cross piece that was supposed to be behind it. Guess I'll have to make one or try to find the correct piece..needed to fill the area below the rear panel and trunk backing wall anyway.

I made a "Bubba repair" by drilling 2 holes through and using log bolts to hold the hinge on the passenger-side in place until I can make another steel flatbar cross piece to hold the upper end of the hinge to the deck support. I made the flatbar crosspiece for the driver-side repair and it worked out well....I still need to fiberglass over the damage area where the rivet nuts broke through the support.
I'm trying to get the car to the paint shop this week and didn't want to bog down repairing things that I an get to after the car is painted.
It is amazing what you have done.
I can't wait to see paint applied.

Thanks guys. I used a long straightedge to draw an ink-mark across the rear edge of the deck lid/then I sanded the excess material off until I met the ink-mark.
I'm working on the long shoulder across the deck adding more body filler to get a vertical shoulder. Then I will set the gap all the way around the opening at 3/16".
DG - awesome work on the decklid gaps and the radius work! I like your air sander - I think I will put that on my list for my next HF visit.
Keep up the great work
Hf units work ok but they consume too much air. You're better off spending the extra bucks unless have a large compressor and good dryer as it'll start puking water. You'd be surprised how quickly it'll drain tank and start spewing water vapor. For light use and I mean light use they are ok.
Just a thought.

Thanks Navy08! HF air tools work good for one-man jobs, but every hour I have to add a few drops of air tool oil to the sander inlet.

It's about 12 years old/the compressor can't keep up any more....I'll compromise with you and buy a larger motor/pump and install it on the original tank.
I tie up some loose ends since I can't finish the front edges of the deck lid without the "drip trays". One tray was broke off and the other one was getting loose.
I cleaned up the broken tray and fiberglassed it into place/I also doubled the thickness of the panel around and under the tray....I also removed all the previous bondo to the left of the tray in the channel and filled the area with mat. This is looking down from passenger door jamb.......
I reinforced the driver side tray by doubling the wall thickness around-under the tray with mat....I'm standing by the quarter panel facing forward.........
Maybe I will have the car ready to go to the painter by 5pm tomorrow.......OR........Saturday....... OR.......Monday

Dang DG, you have been on a roll! Really good progress.
Thanks RBird..............the PTSD and associated problems are on vacation, so I'm trying to get the car painted from the door jambs rearward for inspiration.
I never know how many months I will be functioning "halfway" normally. Having amnesia from combat in Viet Nam is part of the problem....I never know when a one-minute memory will return causing me to be unable to leave my house for months (not even the garage).
(or sleep thru the night)
