I ran into an issue drilling out and reinstalling the alarm switch my 72 originally had. Very scary for me!!!! What do you use a a reference for level? Lots of curves on these cars so what is the reference point when you are determining that something is level??
Ike
I parked the car on fairly level concrete and used a carpenter's level resting on the passenger rear bumpers to level them across the rear of the car. I also measured the space under the tail light openings to the bumper surfaces as another reference. Where the bumpers wrapped around the quarter panels caused the problem. A carpenter's level didn' didn't help because there is no flat area on the bumper surface.....the point of the bumper looked either too "high" or too low when using the level.
Per another member I stepped away from the car about 10 feet, then adjusted the front point of the bumper up/down until it looked "good". I did the same to the other bumper.
For the gas door/lid I used a machinists divider to draw a cross pattern across the door by using the bracket on the underside of the DOOR as a reference point/then I transferred the marks to the DOOR surface....then I drilled the correct HOLE pattern.

Doorgunner, thanks for the info!!!! Good to know. I think it depends on what you are up to. Not many straight lines to reference. I think you need to eyeball a lot of it. Scary to me!!!!
Feel better my friend and get back to the Vette, its my therapy!!!!!
I did the same thing to check for level on things on my 79 but I leveled the car first as one side was a little lower than the other and I adjusted the level of the car front to back according to the factory ride height specifications, measuring at the front and rear of the rocker panels.
Hoping they got your meds rite and your feeling better soon bro !
I still don't have brakes, water pump decided to crap out so it's out and I haven't got the new one back in yet !
I have to be able to run the car to bleed the brakes cause I have power brakes!
Rest up and hope your ready to jump back in soon !
Well SPCL.......it's officially a solid hit with the PTSD. But I know the drill because you members have bailed me out dozens of times already. The new meds are o.k., but they can do only so much.....l just have to endure until the PTSD subsides.
And I had only one day's worth of work left to do. I'll ride this one out until I can do things without making mistakes since the abiliy to concentrate is 0% right now.

Tony, hang in there my brother! The Vette will be there waiting for you when you're up to it so don't beat yourself up...

Hoping that this will pass quickly for you DG !
I broke a bolt for the thermostat housing and work has me so tied up I don't have the time to weld a nut to the bolt so I can possibly twist it out !
One thing for sure bro , it will be right there when I can and then I can move forward !
Knowing my luck yours will be at the painter before I get the brakes bled on mine !
Just take it easy and you'll be back at it before you know it !
Thanks Airborne and SPCL.......I went into the garage today to take a look at the car.....I surely will be glad to get over this so I can have the rear half painted for inspiration to finish the body work on the front door gaps/repair the front clip for paint!

Yesterday I had my stereo half in and was really tired and slightly depressed so I just sat in my car and listened to a couple of nice driving tunes I like and it really, REALLY helped me get grounded and made me happy to grind out the rest of the work today so I could get it inspected, ( lovely massachusetts saftey inspections have to be videoed and pictures taken of the important bits to make sure the inspector is actually doing his job).
Hopefully it will solve some of those stupid LED headlight replacements that light up the tree tops because they actually had the headlight aiming board out and in position!!!
I wish something this simple could help you out DG, maybe this will be over quickly for you and that rear end will be done before the humidity gets tooo nasty down there so you can drive your beautiful ride around instead of laying under it

I wish something this simple could help you out DG,
Thanks R.R. It has to run it's course each time......sometimes a month or two/sometimes 5 or 6. I tried working on the car through the first month/nearly reached my goal, and maybe dodge the PTSD, but that didn't work.
Oh well.....I'll keep checking in and reading threads to stay inspired
Update time: My doctor started me on physical therapy today......It's amazing how simple back-stretching exercises can cause a person to "sweat buckshot" in a 68*F clinic.
The car is still at my house/so is the PTSD, but I am wanting to get it to the painter more each day......which is a good sign.

One day at a time my friend, one day at a time!!!!! Ike
Ike....one day at a time added up to 90 days before the PTSD started to slack off to the point that I can concentrate again!
I painted and installed the new brake booster and master cylinder after bench-bleeding the master c./drove the car back and forth on the driveway to make sure the pedal is firm.
I set the length and installed the booster pushrod before bolting the new master cylinder on (the old/original master cylinder is to the left side of the pic--I will save it........
I connected the vacuum hose/cranked the engine/slowly pump the brake pedal a dozen times before putting the car in gear...................
Normally NON-power brakes would work well, but in Louisiana you need all the braking you can get/people drive as though they are on a go-cart track
Tomorrow I'll clean the splines on the steering shaft and reinstall the column/drive the car through the neighborhood/then bleed the calipers just to be sure.

Looking good. Good to see you back at it again. I need to paint my booster one of these days, it held up fine in CA but now that I’m in a more humid environment it’s all rusty. Too bad it’s a pain to get that thing out of there
