As Mr Spock would say.... "Fascinating!" Can't wait to see it finished Tony!
A.T. ! Long time, No See. I finally got my replacement fuel sending unit...the original gave out-the windins were worn thru.
It should be driveable in a few days.......
Except for the fact that I haven't finished the front clip yet.
The PTSD has been yanking my chain, but I managed to install the new tank sending unit AND begin fiberglassing the area where the filler hose passes through the back wall of the cargo area..
You are seeing the left side, rear area of the cargo storage which I enlarged by removing the fuel tank.
The storage area is now 52" deep from the seats to the rear wall...plenty of room for my wife's suit cases and the soft top when it is folded down
The white material under the new fiberglass is a teflon cover over the opening in the floor to access the sending unit. I will use a dremel tool to cut the area aloose from the floor...then add rivet-nuts and machine screws to hold the cover in place.
How's it going Priya......up to your eyeballs in snow again?
As long as I don't turn into Rumpplestiltskin trying to complete all the mods!
We got somewhere around 12-18 inches in one snowstorm in November, it was a struggle to get in and out of my parking space and the roads were treacherous but since then no snow to speak of. I've been doing nothing much through December although my AMC Eagel SX/4 needs work. I've managed to motivate myself to spend a few days here and there on it since the New Year. I'm currently (well, the hubby and me) installing a 1 micron fuel filter for a Cat diesel as there is constant rust from the fuel tank clogging up the carburetor and I can't get a new fuel tank. The filter is like 8-10 inches long and 4 or 5 in diameter - I sure hope it does the job as the rust has been getting past standard automotive filters.
Convert Units: 1 Micron = 0.00003937" diameter
A human hair is 0.004" in diameter.
That filter will literally stop a COVID sneeze from passing through it!
Does the tank have an electric fuel pump...you probably know to measure the output pressure and volume of flow after installing the new filter. Same deal with a mechanical fuel pump.

No, its a mechanical pump. The spousal unit thinks it may create a vapour lock problem because of the size of the filter and the extra plumbing to move the filter to the inner fender. He says if that's the case I may have to build a heat shield for the filter and mount and duct cold air from in front of the radiator to behind the shield.

Just be sure the pump can "pull" enough fuel through the filter and into the carb before you do all the plumbing.
Priya, why can't you get a replacement fuel tank, I do realize that the car is very old. Is this for your Eagle? Maybe someone can fabricate one for you. I went through this crap with a Buick "Nova" ( Skylark ?) gasoline tank.
An old girlfriend had an AMC Matador and it was a cool car. Lou.

I'll tell my husband.

This is for my eagle. No one makes a new tank for it, you can get a new tank for the Eagle 4 door, 2 door, and station wagon. People on ebay sell a gas tank that fits them and they say it fits the SX/4 but it doesn't. I bet that Matador was a sweet ride!
I'm back! First...the bad news...about a weak back I re-injured my week back...V.A. said they'd think about it
The Good news...the PTSD is at a minimum so I can actually think halfway clearly..
I will finish the access panel to the gas tank sending unit / plumb line to charcoal cannister (aviation thing )
and then correct the remaining minor interior. problems./dirty carpet/driver seat cushion on order/repair ammeter.
Ahhhhh...'tis good to have half the brain cells functioning again!

Hey Tony,
Good to hear you are doing well and you’re able to start making progress again.
Thanks Everyone...I will work with the pain...most of the work can be done sitting behind the car or laying in the cargo area to finish the access panel in the cargo floor corner.
Yep....there is THAT much room back there!
I also just got a late present from Santa. I didn't realize how worn the sill plates were until I set them next to the new plates.......aafter years of looking at "old stuff" it doesn't look that bad until you get the "new stuff"
Hey DG, I know what you mean about the sill plates. They really make a difference because they are front and center when a door is opened.
Glad you're back. Bad backs and such are tough. Wishing you the best. I'm about to tear the rear out of our '68 and redo it all. Good winter/covid projects. Hang in there, Paul

Thanks Paul ! Being a machinist I noticed how the stub axle retaining clips were curved over slightly, which meant the groove each retainer fit in was not deep enough. That caused the clips to fail and pop off the stub shafts. I machined the grooves deeper per the machinist's handbook and have had no problems in 6 years.
BEFORE.....
THE WEAR PATTERN LOOKS GOOD......
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN BAD......
I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM...OR THE GROOVING INSERT WAS WORN OUT WHEN MY PARTS WERE MACHINED?
