D.D. Sorry to hear you are familiar with children and death. Sometimes you let the undesirables live to see another day......"just 'cause" as opposed to Just Cause.

Please ignore all the PTSD clutter on the garage floor

I drilled/tapped/installed a fitting in the side of the tank that the fuel return line will connect to (left side of tank).
I also inverted the tank so the sending unit will be on top per another member's advice....to lessen the possibility of leaks where the sending unit bolts to the tank
I will drill/tap another threaded hole on the other side of the tank to install a pressure relief valve and line to the charcoal cannister.
I will drill / tap a suction hole for my external electric fuel pump at the bottom-left corner of the tank...(the same brand pump lasted 20 years on my '34 street rod)...plus, I wanted to eliminate the worn-out mechanical pump.

I resprayed the mounting bracket until I got some really nice paint runs
I will glue rubber strips to the lower support beams to prevent the tank from chafing / squeaking .It is made of 1/4" wall channel as a crush preventer.......

I did something similar to the frame when the body was off.
I wasn't liking that flimsy POS for rear collision protection..

Good job!
I replace the rear cross-piece with .heavy duty steel channel like your example. The gas tank mount in my pic is made of the same steel AND bolts directly to the inside face of the heavy duty piece.

I need to go to the garage and install the tank today!

My 10 y.o. camera is toast--it won't focus any more. I began installing the tank today by setting it into the mounting bracket.......

Next, I rolled the ATV jack under the car........it looks as though the tank assembly is too big........

After I jacked it into place I temporarily connected all the fuel lines so I can drive the car in and out of the garage.......

The tank bracket is bolted to the frame of the car....the tank cannot be seen when standing behind the car......

Now I need to fabricate a shield to protect the filter and external electric fuel pump from flying debris while driving. I also need to mark the top of the tank in order to cut a 2" diameter hole for the fill- pipe. I think the gas cap will be located behind the license plate.

Your car is looking great Tony. Lots of progress quickly since youve been back. Thats great!!! luckily theres some Gm folding license plate fuel doors on ebay. It'll be "factory" GM still. LOL. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+Door&_sacat=0

Im hoping you can get ithe fill tube high enough to get into the top of the tank. How much room did you leave yourself behind the "trunk area"?

Thanks R.R.... I can actually feel the difference mentally when the PTSD slacks off enough to let my little brain think (halfway) clearly...then my physical ability returns.
Annnnd...you gave me the info I was going to ask for about hinged license plate frames. As for the fill tube...even if I have to split the difference and install it into the top "corner" of the tank, that would be O.K. since I need an air gap for the line that will go to the charcoal cannister.
I will use a non-vented gas cap to prevent leaks when

Bubba is in the house! I collected parts for the Fill-Tube/Gas cap assembly.......

I will have to slide the metal ends into the rubber hose once the tank is back in place to make sure the lengths are correct.
(Do not tell my wife I am using her counter top to assemble the pieces )

I get “the look” when I open up a new part box on the kitchen counter just to take a picture.
I wouldn’t even attempt to assemble parts in the kitchen or the house for that matter.
It would be a battle, I’d loose and then I’d end up with PTSD!
LOL

MSGT_R....that is our secret.......

**************************************** ***************************

Well...Bubba is in the House! My original goal was to place the filler neck behind the hinged license plate.
But....that didn't happen because I had to position the gas tank high in the frame so it couldn't be seen.

I wasn't sure exactly where the fuel filler neck/cap would have to be positioned once the tank was installed (sometimes the PTSD/Meds do not allow for detailed thinking/planning.
It took half a day and I haven't installed the hinge yet, but the tank is now fillable.'

Here ya go....the neck and cap are installed.........

HERE is where Bubba took over....the tail light opening is notched for a hinge on the right side of the opening and for wiring to clear the opening when the tai light assembly is swung open to access the gas cap........

The cap is removed for filling the tank..........

And that is Bubba's story with colored pictures for the day. Tomorrow I will work on the hinge that will bolt to the rear of the tail light assembly and to the inside of the tail light panel.....(whew).

Technically...I remembered my Uncle's new 1955 Chevy two-door...the gas cap was factory hidden behind the left tail light which pivoted open so the gas cap could be removed.
That was the coolest thing for a 5 y.o. kid to watch.
I have a spare gas door hinge that I am modifying to use on the tail light assembly.
