69427.....I just researched the back-up lights. If you remember, the 1968 Corvette was suppose to be the 1967 Corvette. So the 68 only back-up lights are off of a 67 Pontiac GTO and 67 Oldsmobile Cutlass, as far as I can tell. The 66 Cutlass has a wider and narrower lens. The 68 Cutlass has round back-up lights. I can be wrong about this, but that is what I found in some pictures online.

And Tony, don't forget that the biggest piece of crap stuck on our 68 only cars is the ******* swing arm brake light switch that I found out was off of an old Chevy truck! I could choke them for this switch. I went through my original switch and two new replacements in about 2 1/2 years time. They used the plastic plunger brake light switch on 63-67's and from 69-96 I think. I converted mine to the plastic switch in about 1975. I used a switch from a junk yard and it is still working today!

Tony, you are an engineering genius! That is so cool to put your fuel filler behind the one brake light! Tony, please research thread sealant for gasoline. Gas eats everything ( I was a fuel handler in the Army for three years ) and I am afraid that it might leak through the Teflon tape that you have on that brass ninety degree fitting. Lou.

Thanks for the info Lou...I needed it. I bought some fuel-proof tank sealer just in case the teflon tape was a bad idea..

Have you looked at one of these types of caps?

Then you'll have more room as you won't need to unscrew the cap-

Summit racing has them-

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tnk-ptc

or direct from the manufacturer-

That was the coolest thing for a 5 y.o. kid to watch.
Are you sure about the year.
I had a 56 chevy two door sedan in High School that had the gas cap inside the left tail light. I also had a 55 Bel Air hardtop around 1978, but it had the
gas door on the rear drivers side fender panel.

Thanks R454...I was wondering if they actually worked without leaking fuel when under acceleration since the cap is only 2" above the top of the tank.

DG, They work great I have one on my 63 F-100 the tank is under the bed I have a small door to access the filler.

You and Richard made a Sale! It will be nice not having to deal with the cap in a confined space. I need to work on the hinge more so the tail light will open fully.

Hey Tony, this looks great.
I hope this new cap works better than the oem style caps.
I had a couple of cars in the 70’s that had the fuel fills hidden behind the rear plates and under hard acceleration you could always smell a little fuel or get a little splashing out if the tank was full.
That and parking uphill with a full tank was a no no.

Me too O.C.B.

Today I added 5 gallons of gas to the tank to make sure the lower welded seam is O.K. = No leaks in 5 hours
BUT....the $8 relay gave out that is wired to the electric fuel pump. No biggie--it's easy to swap out. Now that the fuel system is working properly I will install a H.D. relay.

Just for future inspiration I installed the finned aluminum valve covers that I painted a year ago. I was amazed how how much quieter the rocker arms became compared to the stamped steel oversize valve covers which were on the engine when I bought the car.........

Naaaaaaaaasty looking engine but it runs great.

Cleaning/repainting the engine and the engine bay are next on the list after the gas tank relay is replaced

It's a good thing I made an access in the floor of the cargo area....the original sending unit failed yesterday...the windings were worn thin.
A new one is on the way. Since the unit is now on TOP of the tank I ordered one for a Camaro .

I thought you meant you could get at it from the *former* filler cap door on the back deck. From the pics it looks like that is still there right?

Yep...I wish I'da thought of that first!

Yep...the original filler lid/door is still there for cosmetics only_non-functional
I could have plumbed a pipe/hose from the original fill location to the tank, but I would constantly be overfilling the tank with gasoline which would spill out of the vent tube into the charcoal cannister.
