Doorgunner's '68 Convertible Project
What happened was.....
I remembered 1960fi's location from his Avatar/While I was in Houston, I remembered a seeing a "Spring Branch Road"/I pulled up a map of Houston and located Spring Branch.......
the rest is.................................LOL.. ....
.......history!That is why I never go any farther than my leash will reach

No.........I was a doorgunner on a Chinook (affectionately know as a "Flying Coffin")......I didn't want to be a Grunt who got shot at all the time (little did I know
)I was assigned as a helicopter mechanic.....some paperwork "got messed up"......instead of a toolbox, the Supply Sergeant handed me a ........................................ ........................
machine gun........
it went downnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnhill from there.

Never road in or jumped out of a Chinook, had friends whom did, but I took off in a few Huey's, just didn't land with them

Here's how dumb I was at age 19, I went into the recruiters office (this was at the the time of the fall of Saigon), told the recruiter I wanted to be in Special Forces, he says ok you gotta jump out of air planes, I said no problem, but you can't sign up directly for SF so we'll assign you to the 82nd but you'll never make it there since after you graduate jump school they will be asking for volunteers for SF before you get on the bus for Ft. Bragg, long story short (yeah too late), there was no one to meet me at the bus asking for volunteers for SF. I did my career in the 82nd, which I'm very proud of

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

I did what you guys recommended and replaced the original radiator with a temporary 1" aluminum radiator. I temporarily tie-wrapped everything in place to test the set-up and see if it would solve my problem(s) before I bought brackets to permanently mount the "new to me" radiator......

It really goes well with Bubba's 1" angle-iron radiator support......
!Rats......the gun reading didn't show-----it should read 195* before the thermostat opened.......

Annnnnnnnd 180* after the thermostat opened.......

I won't wrap the wiring or touch up the ductwork with satin-black until I drive the car tomorrow and test the aluminum radiator....

(All that sheetmetal and piping certainly is u-g-l-y...but there was NOTHING there when I bought the car---experimentation time!)
I'm going to go for another one-hour test-drive before lunch....if the cooling system does well---I'll extend the test-drive to 2 hours.
O.K. Men.........................it worked! I drove the car for one hour in town and on the expressways-----NO overheating.........ANNNND I could actually squeeze the upper radiator hose without needing channel-grip pliers!
I continued driving for another hour on the freeways----50 to 70 mph----NO overheating!
The heat gun and dash temperature gauge both read 180* no matter how hard I drove the car. or no matter how many traffic lights that I encountered.
I now have a 50/50 coolant/water mixture and "water wetter" since there is no more boil-over.
Tomorrow I'll try to get some audio/video when I take the car along some of the country roads.
So.................thanks to everyone for the input

A blocked radiator at the lower half will do that for sure. Now that you have found and tested the solution, time to make under the hood pretty again.

I'm not going to de-clutter the engine bay until I remove the body for some repairs this winter......
(LOL....winter in La. .....3 days in a row of 30*F followed by 3 weeks of 70* F and sunny skies/repeat until mid-April)
I'm still doing everything backwards so I can keep the car rolling to make sure all major problem-areas have been corrected.
By the way....I really need o disassemble the speedometer (AGAIN) and replace the odometer "drive-shaft").....bring the disassembled dash clock to have the main-spring replaced.

no overheating...
The temperature under the gas pedal was 75*f (ambient temp was 70*)
The air cleaner temp was 80*F......(rather than the normal 150*F)
It looks like I can finish making support brackets for the center console/install the new seat belts/shoulder belt guides/ and install the door panels.

you wouldn't hurt my little feelings if you referred to it as "Bubba-on-steroids"

The floorboard temperature under the gas pedal previously was 130*F.
