Default Birdcage Foam

I pulled the passenger side inspection plate the other day to get a better look, and stuck my fingers up the pillar and was suprised to feel a soft spongy foam like material. I wrote this off to another bubba modification.

However, looking at a birdcage on EBay ( photo above), it looks like a square of foam in the birdcage at this location? Is there a chunk of foam from the factory? If so, why is it there?

My 69 had them....

My guess is for road noise or to keep air out or something along those lines as that pillar is basically open into the interior of the car.

H i bar,
The foam pieces are shown in my 71 AIM in UPC1 (Bolt/Weld), Sheet B9, Items #9 and 10.
I believe the material is a very dense firm foam, black in color.
I think it's the same material as items #11 and 12 on the same page.
Here's a picture of items #11 and 12 for a coupe, the shape for a convertible is slightly different.
Regards,
Alan

Ha! I found it in mine last week while inspecting my rear body mounts. The one the derives side was laying in the bottom and the pass side still attached. I'll have to see if its possible to get a picture.

That was on the interior? It seemed to be there to prevent rattling from the interior panel? Mine had them as well though I never found them in the AIM.

I also have them in my 70 coupe on both sides. I'll check my 70 vert to see if it has them. Like mysixtynine stated, they're there for either preventing something going thru that area or to help reduce noise.

I have never seen those before. Are they effective in reducing noise or rattles? Where exactly are they installed? I couldn't find any reference in my AIM.

Hi R,
Look in the vicinity of of the UPC and Sheet I posted...the sheet is named "Body Side - Bonding of Body Panels To Under-Body".
It's quite near the front where the birdcage and body construction/bonding is shown.
I don't know just how long these 'pads' were used.
Regards,
Alan

I have the same foam in my 73 cage and have pulled pieces out of a 74 cage. Don't know the reason for them there

Looking at the AIM (thanks Al) they are called out as "Pad Lock Pillar Deadener". Maybe to keep the hollow pillar from ringing like a drum when the door is shut?
