Three... two... one... lift off!
The cheap key lock is now installed. Same diameter as the start-engine button.
I'll check if a more obvious low-oil-pressure warning is required. Each 2 5/8" gauge turns red when it crosses a threshold though - so I'm not too worried. Example:
Next big steps: dismantle the prototype again, make sure there's room for the Vintage Air defrost and dash ducts, and finally do all the wiring.
Joyeux Noël !
Based on your Avatar, maybe you are going full race car? I don't know as I haven't followed this long running thread.
I don't know what form or materials you will use in the final cut but I hope you have some way of softening the material edges.
Your ergonomics to me are a bit inflexible. When bolted into a five point harness I can barely reach parts of my dash. All your toggles are a stretch and there's a lot of them. And you have a lot of console room.
My C8 wraps around a bit to bring the display face on. All the important switches should be obvious and within easy reach, Slanting the gauges to wrap around driver a bit helps, I think, but you've got a lot of them all in a row so with that decision there is not much you can physically do..
Here's full race that sold on BaT a while back. A long way from the elegance of the Jag but maybe that is more of what you want? Good luck, these are simply one person's opinions and not meant to be disparaging.
Popping in to other parts of this thread you are doing some really nice mechanicals.
If that is the case a bare metal dash board panel fits right in.
It would still look better with some sort of padded top.
But if you are going with carpets, etc, then yeah maybe cover the dash also, with something appropriate. Vinyl, leather, etc.
Race car vibe vs old school GT vibe.
BTW did anyone notice the huge red light on the race car dash?
Oil psi I would expect.
That's old school vs gauges that have a red LED where you can set the turn-to-red point.

Race car with refined touches.
I would replace the dash in my 73 with your new design dash in a heartbeat, if I hadn’t already purchased everything new to make mine totally oem.
Keep it as is!
It’s real cool!
Regarding the Jaguar interior above: it's a nice GT interior - but I'm aiming at a more racer-reminiscent interior without carpet.
Regarding the C3 interior above: nice too - but those toggles and gauges scream '90ies to me. I'm trying to stay closer to the late '70ies.
Regarding the 'cheap' toggles: I am using a combination of on-off, on-on, (on)-off, on-off-on, (on)-off-(on) and on-on-on toggles. I have not found another family of switches that offers those 6 options.
Regarding the floor: no carpet - I am thinking about using these, painted in black:
Regarding the belt harness: I am planning to get the silver Schroth Profi II ASM (with a built-in anti-submarine feature) ...
...with a belt minder in the back...
...or belt guides in my seats:
Regarding the materials: most likely plastic covered with vinyl/faux leather, with soft edges. The various boards that hold the switches and gauges however may be metal with textured black paint.
Regarding the visible bolts: at the minimum, I'll sink them in a bit.
Regarding ergonomics: I am with you here - I am concerned about reach. I think I will give the prototype a try during an extended engine break-in phase and adjust the layout as needed.
Cheers!
It is very important to have an overall "theme" for your project!
It helps you think with a clear head thru all those 1000 little minor decisions!
Yours will be one of a kind!
70s race car vibe, track capable, with A/C.
Any music comes from the engine!!
Looking forward to seeing your progress on your '70.
Hopefully 2025 will be the year I am taking mine out on the street for the first time since 2013.
About the floor 'covering' I certainly can see small pads riveted to the floor under the gas pedal and where your other foot rests. In a 'real' race car, they don't have anything on the floor most especially not anything which could be considered a floor mat - because they move into places where you'd rather they not (e.g. under the brake pedal).
Personally, I think stickers make it a race car - carpet keeps you from being cooked on days where you're cruising the car. Another option, removable floor mats, I've seen several cars which have semi-permanent mats installed in the car via dzus fasteners but are removed for racing and/or show purposes.
Cover the interior in Dynomat or similar for heat reduction.
Then add a layer of plain vinyl on top, dyed in your interior primer grey color, so it is almost invisible.

I don't expect it to be as effective as Dynamat, but I do sacrifices for the sake of aesthetics.
Regarding the metal floor plates pictured above, they gave me cold feet
so I did not push the Purchase button. They are expensive & I am not crazy 'bout them. Thinking about purchasing a knockout punch set and a dimple die set to fabricate my own custom aluminum plates.
Then paint them black, bolt them into place and make them easily removable for cleaning.
Anyways, in the meantime I reinstalled the doors and hood. I received the seat harnesses and installed them as well. I think it looks cool:
I can reach the switches on the dashboard OK, so for the time being I'll keep this layout, and if I realize during the break-in phase that it's just not gonna work, I'll move the critical ones onto the center console.
Thanks for taking a peek!
