I have been trying to save this 1970 Roadster for the last four years. I was finally able to rescue it last week from its premature grave. It is an original small block 4spd A/C two top roadster in factory Daytona Yellow with 90k original miles. It has a 1978 350 in it now, but also came with the original matching numbers engine totally rebuilt and like new. It has the standard issues that a C3 resto project will have but it is what it is.
The main issue I have with it is the VIN tag from the front of the windshield pillar has rusted away. I found pieces of it in the dash but it is not readable. The VIN on the frame matches the title, which matches the engine and trans. What can be done to replace the VIN on the pillar?

Hi KG,
VERY NICE PROJECT.
I believe it varies from state to state as to what the titling process will be. So check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. There is no replacement (like the original) vin tag. Each state does it their own way.
I believe this is something that will need to be done JUST RIGHT so there's never a question of this car being stolen, (when Corvettes often lost their VIN tag), and you being the new owner of this particular car.
Good Luck with your project!
Regards,
Alan
If the Vin tag is that rusty what's the rest of the windshield frame like?
You're one of the lucky people who actually get to rescue them. There is a yellow 67 convertible in the backwoods here in East Texas, looks a lot like your 70. Faded yellow, hardtop, sitting in the weeds like that. The guy who owns it of course is older than the car, and is "saving it to restore one of these days"…yeah…right. It has the 427 hood, but it is hard to look at as he has his junkyard dogs chained to the tree it sits under. Good luck on the project!
Always amazes me how anyone can let desireable cars just sit and waste away.
Glad to see it getting some much needed attention..you know, we all want to see progress pics.
Good luck!
Nice car/project. Lots of ways to go... If the frame is rusted, you could make a really cool sports car with one of those aftermarket frames...
Heck, maybe change the fluids, spray some starter fluid down the carb and fire that ***** up.
Then drive it till the hubcaps fall off!
If the Vin tag is that rusty what's the rest of the windshield frame like?
Exactly. Find out before you start dumping time and money into the car. Tell your DMV about the rotted tag and be prepared to go through layers of bureaucracy. You will end up with a state issued VIN which many feel lowers the value of a car.
Good save mate. It looks like its going to be a great project. Nice looking car, nice colour, great looking wheels. Have fun with it. You are at the right place.
as others have posted.. and just to prepare you...
a rusted out vin tag on the windshield post will almost always mean extensive rust-out of the birdcage and the frame. if you don't fix that, you will never get good money out of the car.
then consider the devaluation of the car from the vin tag issue.
it is either a parts car or will be years of labor and double your $$ estimates to save the car.
