Just bought a 68 convertible that was born on January 3, 1968 and was originally painted Corvette bronze. It is an original BB car with a 4 speed. The PO had the frame powder coated, all new suspension parts, new brakes to include new calipers, pads, rotors and lines, new fuel tank and lines, added power steering and bought new wiring harnesses. All numbers match except the motor which is a 69 427 that is marked "CE" that I assume was a replacement under warranty although the PO didn't have any info. The interior is original and is in decent shape so I may not have to replace too many parts and it has a solid birdcage with only one spot of surface rust that should clean up easily. The body needs a fair amount of work as any 46 year old car would, but the front clip was damaged and will likely need to be replaced as does the soft top. The hard top is in very good condition and all the glass is good. It's disassembled right now and I know it's going to take a lot of time and money, but it's worth it to bring a car like this back to life. Can't wait to get started.
Yeah, it'll keep me busy for sure. I've spent the last couple of days just going through the parts to see what's there and what's missing. So far I need an ignition switch and keys. I've been looking and found that the door locks are nearly impossible to find. Any idea how I could rekey them?

Remove the lock and take it to a locksmith and he/she can make a key easily.
I have seen 1968 ignitions for sale, believe it was a new one also.
Are you going to make the factory air conditioning operational in addition to all the other work ahead? A1968 convertible with 427 and with factory air would be an asset in my opinion. Wish my 68 327/350 had it.

I removed the lock yesterday and had a local locksmith make a key. I tried it when I got home and it works perfectly. One small victory. Yes, I do plan to get the AC working as I live in AZ. No fun driving here in the summer without it. I located and bought the ignition that was on the parts forum here. Another small issue taken care of easily. I wish they were all like that.
Save some $$ by wrapping the hard top in black vinyl instead of painting it Give the car a unique look, and will match any color you want. Only $75 for the kit from Ecklers.
The car seems to be in good shape ... not allot of major repairs or a body off like I had to do. With it stripped you can see what was or was not hit.
My car is not original at all and you are miles ahead of me when I started on my 69.
Please do not take these following statements wrong I am just seeing somethings that could be miss leading by the seller maybe??
I don't want to seem picky and I am not an expert by any means but I see some things that are troubling if this is in fact a real BB car. You have straps instead of caps on the differential. Usually big block cars had caps. The other oddity (not BB related) is that the shifter is actually attached to the trans in your picture? These cars have a separate bracket that goes on the cross member to attach the shifter? The floor does not seem modded so I don't know how that shifter would work on the car? Maybe there were aftermarket shifters for the vette that attached directly to the tails haft housing like on regular Chevys?
Maybe some guys with 68's could chime in as the 68 had a lot of differences compared to my 69.
The seller didn't represent this car as matching numbers. I knew it wasn't when I looked at the number on the block. The transmission matches the vin on the car and I don't know if the rear end may have been changed out in the last 46 years. It doesn't seem likely that someone would try to create a BB car by buying a 427 built in 69. Seems kind of an expensive way to go when there were so many small blocks available, but who knows? I don't care though. I like it and that's the way I'm going to build it. There's a lot I don't know about this car and I'm learning more every day. Good eye on the straps and not caps.
It will be a great looking car when you finish it!
(I found a tail light panel for mine since a previous owner grafted a late '70s panel onto it........aarrgghhh!)
Now that looks like a real fun project ya got there.
Besides the caps on the rear, count the leaf's in the spring. BB's had 9, sb's 7 I believe. Of course over 46 years and different owners things get changed.

Have fun with it.
The rear spring has 9 leafs. I checked the number on the differential and found AM121867. I looked at my restoration guide and see that it is for a 327 or 350. Hence the straps not caps. No matter, it'll still be a fun project and a great looking car when it's completed.

EXACTLY!!!! 7 or 9,........327 or 427.......It's ALL good!
Your 68 only radiator support has the base aluminum SB radiator cushion lower brackets. I think someone added the lower saddle "U" brackets for the larger BB radiator. People are dropping BB motors into their cars every day on this forum. Lou.
