I know the timing is supposed to be 4 degrees BTDC for a 79 L-48. since my motor was rebuilt before I purchased it and was built to 225hp it has a larger cam in it. I DO NOT HAVE ANY SPECS ON THE CAM THAT WAS INSTALLED.My question is where would you set the timing?? and at what rpm???
Back in the 60s, when we could not afford a timing light, we used to keep the distributor bolt finger tight, then keep advancing it until the engine rattled under load at low rpm...then we backed it off a notch and tightened the bolt. Your engine will know what the timing should be...given the gas in the tank and the atmospheric conditions.

Between 10* and 16* BTDC. All in of 36* by 2800 RPM. So you could end up at 16* on the initial if you have 20* total mechanical advance to achieve 36* total. If it's too much and you encounter pinging at WOT reduce 2* at a time until it goes away.
To get the real skinny on timing email lars for his latest papers.

That's funny that you mentioned that. Back in the 60's my uncle used to race stock cars and didn't believe in timing lights. " He said it's all in the ear son. " He could really make a car hum .

Unless you're trying to pass an emissions test, the last thing you want to do is set the timing at 4 initial.
My current timing paper has the complete setup procedure along with recommended specs for different applications. Just e-mail me for a copy.
