I took a long hard look at your car with rack, it has a "classic" refined look, I almost expect to see fine leather driving gloves on the dash awaiting your return,
I never really thought of the "bling" angle.
I was trying to come up with why I don't like it, besides to my eyes ruining the lines,
After reading other posts about hauling stuff or taking long trips and need the space I had to stop and think I must be in the wrong place and time but it's be a heck of a long time since I have seen a c3 driving down the road, and while I have used vettes for daily transportation all my adult life I have never needed extra space, I would be a bit worried to leave my golf clubs ( if I golfed ) or luggage on the back of the car if I went in to eat a meal or shop or whatever, And what if it rains?
Perhaps the rack is a sign of a time gone by, a "classic" time when you were not allowed to pump your own gas and other such things, after a long look at your car and thinking I have a somewhat new way of looking at the rack, I will put it in the folder of necessity, like a trailer hitch, not really meant to be "pretty" but to add function.

Mike,
Since I wrote the rack, it's bolts, and the required well nuts, could be installed from the top, I felt 71 would realize the tank didn't need to be dropped.
Regards,
Alan

If you don't trust the well nuts, It is possible to put nuts on the screws from underneath without removing anything. I did that when I was 25 yrs old and much more flexible.

Best looking SCG on the forum. Whose paint did you use gq82?

I'm SCG with a luggage rack as well. If you have a rack, keep it. If you don't, don't install one. The holes are very difficult to repair where they won't be noticed.

Personally, I like the rack. It's a period thing, and I like the extra "bling".

Since you mentioned pumping gas , how are you supposed to pump your gas into the tank without unloading everything on the rack to get to the cap ? And with a big block that would be every few miles.

Aw, My big blocks have always got better mileage than my small blocks,
I guess you would have to unload to fuel, never thought of it, with or without the rack two very different looks...
I felt a bit badly, the OP wanted to get opinions on the luggage rack and like many who replied I was all against it, it's his car it's his choice...

This is exactly my feeling on the topic as well. My car had one since new and, although the PO had long ago removed the original rack (rusty), it still had the well nuts. Last year I scored a replacement rack and put it back on. I really don't like the look, but, also didn't like the look of the unused holes on the deck.

I would be really sure it was something I HAD to have before adding one to a car that had never had one originally.

Yep , I was kidding about the big blocks . I actually had a guy years ago tell me that his tilt bed car haulers that he used in his car auction business got better gas mileage than his small block trucks because he said they didn't have to work as hard. Makes sense.

All the racks were dealer installed and I assure you they didn't pull the tank to install them. There is plenty of room between the deck and the tank.

Here is a copy of the original 77 rack installation instructions, I'll see if I can dig them up for the 68-76 cars and post them on the site soon.
