It was done because of regulations requiring that a car emerge from a 5mph impact without damage. The following year required that the rear end handle a 2.5mph impact with no damage.
Those pretty chrome bumpers were pretty much decorative only in function.
Are you saying that the 68-72 hidden wipers went away as part of the 5 mph impact survival requirement? I could see how that mechanism might have a tough time surviving a minor impact to nose of the car. Or were you referring only to the 1973 nose job?

I have restored mine with new gaskets and it works, but I can´t feel any difference if it´s open or closed.[/QUOTE
Whether or not it works is immaterial. The feature has a GREAT name. Easy for me to say--never had a C3.....
8 track player. Nothing says 70's more than that. Pick up some old 8 tracks at a flea market and your kids will think you have finally gone over the edge!
I got mine in my 78, and it even works. At car shows I got the soundtrack to "Grease" blasting.

I was referring to the switch to rubber bumpers. The intent was to lower repair costs of minor incidents, so it's quite probable the wipers were part of the consideration
I don't think this is dumb, but I find the pedals are to close together. (4 speed) I wear a size 8.5 shoe and if am not conscious about my right foot placement I hit the brake and gas at the same time. Hate that. Need to buy some driving shoes as the toe box is narrow for more clearance.
Try putting all 3 pedals in your passenger side.....that's what right hand drive cars have .
Can't recall the amount of times I've gassed it while braking.
Poor ol' Granny (using the pedestrian crossing)
has never moved so fast.
They deleted the wiper panel to save weight and money, in '73. And deleted the wonderful removable rear window, to save money and a couple of ounces!!! Lou.

GM must've been mighty pleased when the pop up headlights went out of fashion, car still cost the buyer the same but there was half a wheel barrow full of parts no longer required, up goes the gross profit
As for the wiper door, I'm thinking sales gimmick really as the long hood on the 73 does almost as good a job aesthetically with a lot less hassle JMPO, once again a pile of parts no longer reqd up goes the gross profit again Was a shame about the rear window I agree, I often take mine out when I have the tops off, seems to be a little less turbulence and I can hear the music from the exhaust better PO never used to take the window out, he said he was worried it might start leaking but so far I have not had any issues.
Much appreciated feature for me is once the spare tire carrier is out of the way there is a heap of room to work on the rear suspension or differential.
I wish that GM would have had a unified frame for all C3's. A removable transmission crossmember for all auto and manual tranny cars. The autos had this feature, it would make R&Ring a manual tranny car soooo much easier. Also, the little frame bracket for the manual shift cars Z bar. It is absent on the auto cars. It would be sooo nice if it were there for people who want to transition from autos to manual trannies.

There was a news program recently where the news reader got in trouble for using the word "tranny." Maybe in today's world of political correctness you can't say "tranny," you have to say "transmission."
This little clip missing will cause the door to slide open, without it in there the door moves about freely and I've seen many of them missing over the years. funny I just saw Lou's post too..
What is even funnier is that when Trim parts started making the shift plates they had no idea the clip was there so all the first run shift plates had ash tray issues. I talked to them, sent them an original and in return they sent me box full when they reproduced it.
Mine is an early 75 and has no clip, i guess i will order one of these so i can take out the match book cover stuck in the corner to prevent the stupid cover from sliding.
