I've taken the windshield wiper door mechanism out of the car for restoration. Due to some heavy oxidation on the wiper mechanism, I used por-15 on those parts. But the wiper door mechanism doesn't have any heavy oxidation, just not sure how to proceed on it. Any suggestions will be welcome, or better yet, what did you use?
Hi Dean,
The wiper door mechanism had semi-flat black paint on it originally as was typical of so many parts.
I used Krylon #1613. Many people speak highly of John Deere Blitz Black and SEM Semi-Flat Black too.
Regards,
Alan

Paint has always been a PAINt in the ***, and it sure not any better over the decades.....
but at least this cheeeeeeeep paint from the parts house seems to have buried the rust and naked steel after some sanding bouts , ok on an old hooptie '94 Rust rado on the hood and cab top, funny how the sides and even horizontal surfaces of the fender never have an issue, but that HOOD and CAB sure to....doors fine, next panel in the actual top of the truck....not so much so....

Thanks for the info. Alan, I've copied the text into a document for safe keeping
I found 4 cans of the 1613 for $38, includes shipping, from a company in CA. It looks like this paint is getting hard to find, been discontinued according to my research
Hi 69,
Was it painted before or after it was assembled….. are the bushings white or black?
Regards,
Alan
The assembly looks like it had been assembled and then dipped The bushings were painted and when I soda blasted I saw thick paint on the edges so I don't think it was dipped as an assembly. That's just my thought.

John Deere Blitz black has the same appearance as Krylon 1613; it is better paint, IMO; and it is readily available at any John Deere dealer and/or supply place...or on-line.
Any of the paints Alan71 listed are good for any 'blackout' painted areas on the C3.
Hi,
I think people need to be aware that the #1613 is still lacquer while the other 2 paints I mentioned (John Deere & SEM) are enamels.
The fact that it's lacquer does affect how it can be sprayed and thus how the resulting degree of sheen can be varied from the same can of paint.
This is useful for example in the engine compartment where different parts, while still semi-flat black, had different levels of sheen.
I believe for instance that small brackets that were dip painted had a bit more sheen than, for example, the fiberglass aprons.
I think this look, to some degree, is because of the amount of paint on the the dipped part as opposed to the sprayed part too.
This variation in sheen isn't likely to matter to most people, but spraying lacquer is quite different than spraying enamel so people should be aware of how to handle what ever they choose.

Alan

I used to use Krylon 1613 for all of the factory semi flat parts . It was a perfect match for a factory look , but unfortunately Krylon stopped making it. I have been using Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover . It comes in gloss, semi gloss, and flat .
Hi bj1k,
Krylon has continued to produce and distribute #1613.
It's generally not in retail outlets however, but is readily availible at good prices from industrial suppliers…. a couple of which are mentioned earlier in this thread.

Alan

Yes Alan I am aware of it still being supplied to the industrial suppliers but they will not make and distribute it to the general public , at least not in the Pittsburgh area. I've tried and was told that they can only sell to contractors etc. If anyone knows where I can buy it in this area please let me know. I would go back in a heartbeat. It seems that they are trying to run out the do it yourselfers. I recently tried to buy a furnace part through a parts supply warehouse for heating and plumbing that I had bought from many times and was told that they weren't allowed to sell to the general public anymore.
