Default Engine compartment paint

Does anyone have any recommendation for engine compartment paint. I been using spray cans but it gets dirty and holds dust real bad and then it looks dingy. Any help would be appreciated

Hi C400,
Are you using flat or semi-flat black paint?
The original paint used was semi-flat black.
Most people find semi-flat much easier to maintain than flat.
The paints mentioned often here are Krylon #1613 (not the new formula #51613), John Deere Blitz Black, and SEM Semi-flat black.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

I have been using krylon semi flat but it doesn't give me the results im looking for. I wonder if I can use the semi gloss paint that Chrysler painted there hoods it looked like it held up well.

Thanks Alan

I suspect that either your parts have not been cleaned thoroughly, or that the paint is not being sprayed fully (usually needs one light coat, followed by a second 'wet' coat after a few minutes drying time).

If you don't get full coverage with your paint, it will look 'fuzzy' and not smooth out. I've not had any problem with any of the paints listed by Alan71.

Hi C400,
That surprises me!
Are you sure it's #1613 and not #51613?
The vast majority of the engine compartments and wheel wells I see that I think look good have semi-flat paint on them.
Flat isn't a surface that's easy to maintain, nor is 51613.
Regards,
Alan

If the paint used is too glossy it really begins to show the compartment's and wheel wells' imperfections.

I restore vintage JD garden tractors so I'm familiar with the paint Mother Deere sells. Blitz black is excellent quality but a little too flat for me. Tends to get chalky looking after several years. I use JD black semi-gloss instead. The low level shine is just about right and very easy to maintain. When it's dry it looks pretty much the same as the low gloss black factory powder coating you see on new barbeques. I've used it under the hoods of my bigger toys and I especially like it for doing brackets and various small parts. I lay it on in nice thin coats and then go just a tad thicker on the last pass. Best thing to do is buy a rattle can of each, try them and decide for yourself. You may want to use the semi-gloss in some areas and the flat in others. What I like about both paints is they're very consistent over time. When I paint something with them now they look (and go on) the same as something else I painted years ago. Not that I can paint anything right now. Man I hate winter.
