Hi d,
What are you looking for in a cap?
One that works?
One that works and looks sorta right?
One that works and looks correct because it's a restored original?
Regards,
Alan
Thats a good question. The car is a nice, original but mostly unrestored car and am thinking about having the car judged for the first time(at least under my ownership). Has a parts store stant cap on it now but I saw the repro caps and they aren't too terribly expensive so was curious about whether or not they're any good appearance/functionality wise. Saw some NOS ones and some restored ones but theyre pretty pricey. Even the original but nonfuctional ones arent cheap. Was hoping to get something that works/looks well but not pay a arm and a leg for it.
Hi 69,
To my eye the difference is VERY slight.
The original (the caps I believe to be original) caps that I see have lettering and digits that are not too deeply or precisely stamped into the cap's surface.
The reproductions have (again to my eye) very deeply stamped and well defined letters and numerals.
It's a very subtle difference at best. But if you've seen a few original caps it's pretty easy to spot.
Here's a re-plated original RC-26… compare it to the pictures in D74's link.
Regards,
Alan
Hi D74,
In your case I think a reproduction is a good choice!
It's gotten to the point that people at judging events don't leave the radiator caps and gas caps on their cars if unattended because they disappear.
