Default Ignition not going to lock

Help I cannot get the ignition to go into the lock position. What am I doing wrong?

Does your car still have the transmission/lock cylinder interlock cable? The cable that runs from the transmission shift lever up to the steering column? If so most owners trash that cable but if you are dead set on keeping your car original you can buy a new cable from any of the Corvette vendors. Over time the cable gets seized in the outer housing then it gets bent where it attaches to the lever on the steering column.

If it's the car in your avatar 68 or 69 then I don't know without more information but if it is like my 72 , I think 70-72 and maybe later have a cable that goes from your transmission to the steering column. It has to be in reverse and maybe just needs an adjustment.

Never have heard of that cable. What does it do? I went to shut it off as always but I have never shut off the car in reverse that I can remember. Is there a site out there that would have a drawing of this cable and its to and from areas? This is a 4 speed

Hi P,
Here're 2 pictures… one at the steering column end of the cable and one at the transmission end. The cable attaches to the reverse lever on the transmission.
The drawing you're looking for is in your AIM. In the 71 AIM it's UPC 7, Sheet B5.
The steering column and ignition switch is designed so that the key can only be removed with the transmission in reverse. (The car can be shut off but the key can't be removed with the transmission in any other gear or neutral.)
Regards,
Alan

You might want to tie that lever in the up position. It could vibrate down and lock it again when you are out somewhere.

Thanks for that Jim. I had a 68 so I knew it didn't have the interlock system but wasn't sure about the 69 and didn't realize that it continued through 76. We learn something new everyday on here.

Now you can understand why most owners removed their cables and threw them into the garbage. Just another way Big Brother was trying to protect us from ourselves.
