Hi I am ready to install my Borgeson steering box with the box out of the car am trying to find the centre of the steering by turning the rag joint on the steering box by hand . When it gets to near the centre point it gets harder to turn is this normal ?
Also what's the easiest method of reinstalling the Borgeson i've found working from the top seems to be the best but to get the steering box in then push the bolts through the frame seems to be a 2 person job
That's the way you find center, check the place it tightens from each side and mark the center. In other words, mark the center as the middle of the tight section. Do this before you install and mark TDC. Center the wheel and lock it (mark that too) before you remove the old box. Don't move the wheels after you center the steering wheel. I pulled the pitman arm from underneath and let it hang, bolted up the box, and reinstalled the pitman arm and then the rag joint and everything came out perfectly straight. Just (again) make sure the Borgeson box is centered before you connect the rag joint to the column. I agree, it's a two person job to push the bolts through the frame and hold the box in place. I worked underneath pushing the bolts through while a buddy moved the box around to line up the holes. I used the old bolts because they were shoulder bolts and the bolts that came with the Borgeson were not, meaning you had to have two wrenches to tighten (one to hold the bolt and one to tighten the nut) with the new bolts.

Thank you ,when installing the new box centred how do u line up the rag joint so the steering wheel is correct. Do you leave the rag joint as one piece or do you split it with one half on the pump and the other half on the steering shaft. The bolt the 2 pieces together when the box is bolted on
I split the rag joint and bolted it back together after the box was in place. Of course I had it 180 degrees out and had to remove the box again and switch it.
The flat on the steering shaft (column side) does not match the lock screw on the borgeson coupler. Borgeson tells you to grind a second flat on the shaft. I went another route and drilled & tapped a new hole on the coupler instead.

As I said, I marked the top center of the steering column with a magic marker, did the same on the steering box shaft so that when correct, both will be straight up. I separated the rag joint also in order to get the upper half on the shaft without going further in with it, then bolted them together. I didn't grind a flat, I just tightened the set screw up where it was. The fit was so tight that I had to knock it on and then I tightened the set screw. The splines will keep it from slipping rotationally.
