Default Paging Alan71

Alan since you have so many great pictures of your car during restoration.
Do you have a picture of the screw that installs at the front, underside of the rocker trim?
I'm pretty sure no screw was ever installed ,as it would bend the little tab on the rocker trim. But the judges deem it necessary to be there.
TIA PM

Hi AZM,
I would certainly think that a screw was installed on your car originally.
But, who knows?!?
I'd first look at the tab on the rocker trim for signs of a screw being there at some point. The aluminum is quite soft and the trim I've looked at generally exhibit scars from the screw head.
I'd also look carefully at the fiberglass tab on the fender. It often exhibits signs of the u-nut being slid into place.
The fastener I see on original cars is often a small self tapping screw with a recessed hex head and a flange.
For some reason I can't post the screw picture right now?!? It won't 'copy'. I realize I stole it but how does the picture know that? I'll keep trying.
Regards,
Alan

This fender tab is on a piece of fender I cut off a nos repair panel so hasn't ever had the u-nut pushed on it so there are no 'tracks'.

This is a good example of the mark the screw head left on the rocker trim tag.

I cant recall from my short memory if there are "tracks" from the screw head.
There are U nuts installed on both fenders though. And if I recall correctly at least on this car there is a small gap between the trim and the tab on the fender. I'll take a closer look at everything tomorrow.
If you need to you can email me the pic of the screw.

Sheet metal "nut" and a #8 sheet metal screw with oval head and Phillips drive, I believe.

I just went out and took a look at mine and your description sounds about right. Mine has never been removed.

Sure, here ya go....44 plus years of dirt.

Also, my rocker trim screw head mark looks just like Alan's picture below.

Hi,
I'd certainly call the screw in 454's picture a pan head.
It's not any of the screws in ax's pics.
I looked at 5 rocker tab screws today.
1 with screws as in 454's picture, and 4 with hex, indented head, flanged, bolts.
Regards,
Alan

Paul,
Which year are we talking about? NCRS JG spells out differences, but I'm away from the JG until tomorrow.

GM probably bought whichever screw was cheapest at the time for that application. It's not really visible, so all it needed to do was 'functionally' hold things together. Any screw of the right length and thread size would do that job. I seriously doubt that it had anything to do with what model year it was...regardless of what the NCRS 'experts' say. GM may have purchased different screws from several vendors during each model year.

But, if you are going for NCRS judging, you should follow their 'recommendation'.
