Default 71 454 feedback

Hi all,

Looking for feedback on this engine in a 71 454 I'm looking at. I'm not an expert on these engines but curious what looks original and isn't (not correct).

Thanks in advance.

Anything else the novice should know about these engines?

Looks very correct to me. I see the notched blade fan, 5-port washer pump (replaced, original would have yellowed with age), correct ignition shielding with braided wires, brass expansion tank, TCS relay, etc

Yeah, it all looks good.

From what we can see, this looks like a well restored car.

I think the 454's are pretty durable engines. Torquey. They are heavy. Engine heating, BB withj AC, can be a problem if the radiator is not up to par. The car likely has a 3.08:1 differential, or maybe the next higher numerical ratio differential. With a 3.08:1 ratio, gas consumption should not be a problem.

If original it will have a 3.08:1 rear gear. That was the only ratio available for a 454 4-speed w/ AC.

Expect 8-10 mpg driving around town.

Looks good to me, but I do notice that the sticker is missing on top of the fiberglass behind the master brake cylinder.

It looks like a nicely kept car, but I would plan on a very miserable day changing those spark plugs on the passenger side with A/C.

Pretty correct appearance in the engine compartment, only non-original component I see is the master cylinder.

Hi,
I agree it looks like quite a nice compartment!
The only thing I notice is there's a replacement stainless steel radiator cap being used which wouldn't have been there when the car left St.Louis.
Having the distributor cover and air cleaner removed would show a bit more detail.
Regards,
Alan
