So, I didn't take as many pictures last time... so I over corrected this time. Whoops!

First, I removed the core support and built a new reinforcement from wood to secure the nose.

That is how it was sitting. with the strap holding it all in place. The radiator support and the cross member under the nose and the support brackets needed to be removed. The brackets to be blasted and coated.

Started by resting everything on jack stands.

Holds the front end much better

Check... Check... Check... Would you use heat too?

Whatever it takes! It's already messed up. Do what you can to save it.

Default Front Under Radiator Frame Cross Member

When I did my tear down, I found a nasty bend in the front radiator cross member:

I tried once to bend it using a propane torch... but no dice. So I picked up a new toy: MAP Gas

Got her bolted in the vice, and turned up the heat!

A little after picture:

Not perfect, but not bad for my first shot!

Got her all blasted! Now with the exception of a sheared bolt, she looks brand new

What do you all think?

Bob, great work man!! Now I feel like an *** for whining about working in my 1 car garage. Hows your bird cage look?.....the one shot I saw of the under dash didn't look too bad. My windshield frame has similar issues and Im still contemplating what the best option is.

If you ever make it down to Norfolk, give me a shout, Im right around the corner from the base.

Thanks Greg, The birdcage is in decent shape, looks to be not much more than surface rust. In one very small portion on the upper passenger side it rusted through, smaller than my pinkey nail. I need to get the windshield out - then I will get a better idea.

I wish I would have known that I spend the week before last in Norfolk. I will probably get down again sometime soon, I would love to check out your project.

sounds good...Im also interested in picking your brain about that SRIII chassis...did you go C5 suspension front and rear? Another local guy is sticking one of those under his '63 but went C5 front, C4 rear....he said something about being able to get more tire under the C4 rear. Do they give you any idea as to what size wheel/tire you can run?

Im also curious what the cost difference was between ordering just the bare frame, and finding a C5 donor car vs. ordering the frame as a roller with the full suspension and differential installed with the plywood wheels.

Keep up the good work!

I went with C5 Suspension front and rear, I already had a donor C5 that I had purchased previously (Before I was planning on this project and before I knew SRIII was a thing) See post 1 for how this whole thing kinda got started. I know they sell a full up rolling chassis, and If I was planning this project from scratch, I would probably go that direction. I also probably could have shipped them all of my parts and they could have assembled the rolling chassis for me, however I want to do some of the "Fun" stuff myself. Mike is awesome and has done a lot of stuff above and beyond just the base frame. I sent in a set of C5Z06 Sway bars which they sectioned to work with the setup.

For my drive-line, I went with RPM Transmissions, and they took in my C5 T56 and Diff in as partial core for the TR6060 and Camaro Diff. So a good chunk of the parts from the C5 are being used or exchanged. (I wish I had thought about that, I have two sets of stock C5 Sway bars sitting in a storage unit that I don't have access to)

I am not sure what the cost difference will be in shipping the frame in a crate or on the plywood wheels.

I am not sure either about the max wheel width, but the limitation will be the suspension A-arms, and not the fiberglass, as the entire rear floor section will be removed and re-glassed to fit. I am going to go with the most width inside of the caliper as possible. With that, I am going to look at the geometry of using the LG Drop Spindles to see if they will allow for a wider wheel inside over the stock spindles, in addition to the added benefit of having a better suspension geometry with a lowered stance.

Hopefully that answered some of your questions, please feel free to shoot some more. Its easier to answer questions here honestly rather than just trying to "blog" what I have been doing. Thank you for your interest.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I look forward to your continued progress....as I decide what to do with my '69 that has at least some bird cage, and some frame damage, Im also considering going the SRIII route...I figure if Im going to go to the trouble of separating the body and frame, I might as well upgrade while Im in there....its only money right
