I found a 69 Coupe about 200 miles from me. I asked the seller to send me a picture of the VIN and this is what I got.

Hi z,
It appears to be a replacement vin tag. It looks like it's glued or spot welded in place.
The original could have been removed and replaced because the car was stolen at some time, may have been replaced because the original was 'destroyed', or perhaps replaced because it was rusted to oblivion.
I'd expect that there's some kind of 'story' that goes along with the vin tag AND the car.
Regards,
Alan

Here's a more typical tag. You can also just see part of one of the pop rivets that attach the tag to the a-pillar.

I have to agree with Alan, it looks like a replacement, I've never seen a plate like this before, but perhaps it is ok?

Yes but the number looks nothing like a standard VIN. Shouldn't it be the same VIN even if the plate is different?

Yes fishy...ask to see the title and MAKE SURE EVERYTHING MATCHES.
It may provide answers to your questions.

If its in a different state expect MORE problems

A quick google search shows vin 1P87H associated with 2nd gen Camaro. But I also see other VIN Id's associated with a Camaro, so it's not consistent. Here is a link to one reference...

Hi Z,
No a vin tag replaced by a state, local jurisdiction, or police department typically doesn't look anything like an original vin tag.
Often they're not even put on the a-pillar because of the limited access.
They're sometimes in the engine compartment somewhere (cowl), or in a door jamb.
A car without an original vin tag ALWAYS raises suspicions until the explanation for it is given (and believed!).
Regards,
Alan

Just speaking for myself but I would never even consider buying any car , especially a Corvette with a tag that looks like that even if it was a legitimate replacement tag. And I would expect to have other potential buyers walk away if you ever went to sell it.

It looks like *1P87H AL 5259S2. Very strange. I'm waiting on the dealer to call me about it.

Definitely. But it has me so curious. I'm going to let them think I'm interested just to find out.

My advice is to pass on this car. The VIN tag in your post is not a Corvette tag.

Looks like a vin number assigned by the state of Alabama. They issue vin's for cars where the frame or engine has been replaced. Might want to see a copy of the title to be sure it isn't a salvage title.

Alabama will issue a VIN tag for about anything. You need to steer clear of this one!

Legitimacy aside, jeez...if the tag is that rusty, what's the rest of the car like? Car stored in a shed by the ocean?
