Default 1970 serial #

My 1970 Corvette has an R at the end of the serial number .... can anyone tell me what that means?
Thanks!

Hi W,
WELCOME!
Where does this serial # with the 'R' appear?… VIN Plate, Engine Stamp, Title, Protect-o-Plate?
Regards,
Alan

Repossessed.

Sorry. There should be no R at end of the VIN.

Reconstructed comes to mind, but as Alan said, we need to know where you see the R

Need to see a pic of this one. Your VIN should end in a number.

It could stand for Red since many manufacturers at the time put an abbreviation to represent the color, especially blue and red.

The mechanic who Rebuilt that engine is the likely source of the added "R". And while I admire whoever did it to demonstrate that the engine was original but no longer 'exactly' like the original build, it was very presumptuous to permanently change the VIN designation, probably without the consent of the car's owner.

On Corvette VINs this is not the case.

Really? I didn't know that. Which manufacturers did this?

The R is on the end of the VIN plate and on the door manufacturer sticker. We were told that it might stand for a factory car to race midamerica????

Hi W,
I agree with WB that seeing some pictures of the VIN tag and Certification Label will be pretty INTERESTING!

May the R stands for reproduction VIN plate & door sticker. There was NEVER a letter at the end of the VIN # on the factory installed ones.

Not likely. GM was not supposed to be actively involved in auto racing at the time.
