C3 Corvette Turns to Toast After Four-Year Restoration

This makes me shutter about how close I came to this. When I bought my '65 fuelie 3 or 4 years ago, the seller told me that he brought it to an "expert" who had rebuilt the high pressure pump and the fuelie unit. It was running poorly, so I inspected it closely and found that gas (100LL aircraft gas) was leaking from the high pressure pump onto the intake manifold and down onto the exhaust manifold when the engine was running. Luckily, I had not run it very much, so I shut it down, took apart the fuelie unit and brought the high pressure pump to Jack Podell at Corvettes at Carlisle. I also bought a rebuilding kit from him. He had the pump back to me within a week, and after rebuilding the unit with his kit, it's been running great ever since. Because of that scare, I now carry a 10 lb. ABC fire extinguisher.

I threw up in my mouth a little. Possibly every Vette owners worst nightmare.

I have a fire extinguisher the floor in front of the pass. seat. Watching that makes me want to add one to the driver's seat. Once the flames get that big I think it is over, but maybe if you can keep it from getting that big you might have a chance to stop it.
anyway, I would hate that video being made into a joke. I was sick watching some of it.

Those little fire extinguishers might help a small isolated fire, that one was being fed fuel. I've had carb fires, keep cranking! Usually just sucks them out. That was probably a fuel leak.
I know when I fired my engine, I had the garage door open, the car on the ground and fire extinguisher on hand. I did have a backfire and flames just kept cranking. Readdressed the timing, and it came to life for the first time.
It's easier o lose a car than your home or life. I had watched a YouTube video of a young man shortly before I fired my engine. A backfire and all the wrong reactions caused serious damage to his car.
If the car were on jacks you can't push it outside if really necessary.

[QUOTE=LT1M21Vette;1591877126]That's what insurance is for. Get the check, and buy another one.[/QUOTE
Id like to hear the root cause of the fire so we can all learn. Rubber gas lines on top of the engine is one possibility. Or a sticking float. Or a backfire on start, but looks like it was running down the road.

After seeing several cars burned on the side of the highway over the years, ALL my cars have fire extinguishers now.

Safety Car
This is why I am thinking about doing a plumbed fire system, I had one in a Superformance Cobra, I needed it once when the fuel filter ruptured, and had a fairly serious engine fire! Now I am thinking about one for the 80

I feel for you. Anyone who has put in that kind of work knows how much that car meant to you.
But, I'm glad that there was no accident with it and that no one was injured (except your feelings, of course).
Hopefully, you had the car insured with a collector car insurer; and you had set an "Agreed Value" at least equal to the real value of the finished car.
P.S. That photo affects me more than some because my car is Bridgehampton Blue, too.

Saw the pic, won't watch the vid. I had a jeep that I was 4 wheeling in with a bunch of friends and theyre vehicles. Mine started on fire and the fire followed the return line to the tank. I didnt have an extinguisher and and was throwing sand on it to try and smoother it. It was a small fire and easily extinguished if my friends would have helped. My friends dragged me away and sat on me to keep me from trying to save it. They said "its gonna explode."
We watched it get fully engulfed and burn to the ground. Comprehensive insurance, no fire. Only thing left to re use where the axles. It never exploded. Fire chief and 2 fire captains said in all their years on car fires, never saw one explode, except on tv. Makes me mad. The vette fire makes me sad.
I have a 5 lb behind the seat, guess I'll get a second 5lb behind the seats and a 2.5lb for the passengers seat. Would love to have a race car halogen system under the hood. Anyone have one of those systems? Cost?
